  1. 6. Neurorestorative strategies involving neurogenesis, neuronal precursors and stem cells in animal models of Parkinson's disease

    Författare :Ming Zhao; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Parkinson s disease; substantia nigra pars compacta; adult neurogenesis; stereology; apoptosis; dopamine; tyrosine hydroxylase; nestin; 5-bromodeoxyuridine; [3H]-thymidine; MPTP; 6-OHDA; platelet-derived growth factor-BB;

    Sammanfattning : The general aims of the thesis is to provide evidence for neurogenesis in the adult substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc), where the dopamine-producing neurons lost in Parkinson's disease (PD) reside; to optimize methods used for detecting newborn nerve cells in adult brain regions with a low rate of neurogenesis; to explore the mechanism of nerve cell death in animal models of parkinsonism and early degenerative and restorative changes in nigral cell populations; and to develop a therapeutic approach that could translate into a future restorative disease-modifying strategy in PD. 2. 7. Non-ionic block copolymers and proteins at the air-water interface

    Författare :Brita Rippner Blomqvist; Per M. Claesson; Cosima Stubenrauch; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The behavior of block copolymer and protein films at interfaces is of central importance to their function in many application areas. Poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymers function e.g. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Transthyretin and the transthyretin-related protein: A structural study

    Författare :Erik Lundberg; A. Elisabeth Sauer-Eriksson; Lennart Sjölin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Transthyretin; Transthyretin-related protein; X-ray crystallography; Protein structure; Amyloidosis; Structural biology; Strukturbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Transthyretin (TTR) is one of several proteins involved in amyloid disease in humans. Unknown conformational changes of the native state of TTR result in aggregation of TTR molecules into amyloid fibrils, which accumulate in extracellular tissues. This may result in different clinical symptoms, e.g. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Mechanisms involved in amyloid induced cytotoxicity

    Författare :Johan Östman; Lars Lannfelt; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :amyloid; transthyretin; cytotoxicity; apoptosis; caspases; aggregation; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Amyloidoses comprise a group of diseases where normal or mutated protein precipitates into amyloid fibrils. The deposition of fibrils causes dysfunction of organs and toxicity to nervous tissue. Up to date, 24 different proteins and peptides are known to be able to form amyloid fibrils. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Molecular mechanisms and targets of new anticancer treatments

    Författare :Amirata Saei Dibavar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The work presented in this thesis is an effort to decipher and understand the mechanism of action (MOA) of anticancer agents by building on and complementing chemical proteomics methods. The backbone of the thesis relies on a recent method called Functional Identification of Target by Expression Proteomics (FITExP) developed in Zubarev lab, where drug induced proteomic signatures are analyzed in various cell lines and top differentially regulated proteins with consistent behavior are determined, among which the drug target and mechanistic proteins are usually present.
