11. Colonic mucus structure and processing
Sammanfattning : The mucus layer covering the colonic epithelium creates a crucial first line of defense against the gut residing bacteria. Several lines of evidence suggest that a functional mucus layer is essential for health. For example, it is. suggested that ulcerative colitis is correlated with mucus layer defects. LÄS MER
12. Understanding the gastrointestinal mucus and its impact on drug absorption
Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal mucus is a hydrogel lining the luminal side of the gastrointestinal epithelium. Mucus is vital for gut homeostasis because it protects the epithelium from the noxious external environment. LÄS MER
13. Abdominal compartment syndrome and colonic ischaemia after abdominal aortic aneurysm repair in the endovascular era
Sammanfattning : Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (ACS) and colonic ischaemia (CI) are serious and potentially lethal complications after open (OSR) and endovascular repair (EVAR) of ruptured (rAAA) and intact (iAAA) abdominal aortic aneurysms. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the incidence, outcome, and risk factors associated with ACS (Papers I-III) and to evaluate extraluminal colonic tonometry for postoperative surveillance of colonic perfusion (Paper IV). 14. Experimental Colonic Obstruction and Anastomotic Healing
Sammanfattning : Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases world-wide. Most patients can be diagnosed, staged and treated by surgery in an elective setting. However, about one fifth of the patients will have an emergency presentation and in most cases due to malignant obstruction of the left colon. LÄS MER
15. Neural control of colonic epithelial transport, motility and permeability in vivo. An experimental study in anaesthetized rats
Sammanfattning : Colonic dysfunction may result in diarrhoea, abdominal pain or constipation, andinflammatory bowel disease, bile acid malabsorption and particularly irritable bowelsyndrome are very common disorders. The role of the enteric nervous system (ENS) inthese diseases is largely unknown. LÄS MER
