16. Gene expression profiling in animal models of alcoholism
Sammanfattning : Genetic and environmental factors in alcoholism interact at the level of the transcriptome to encode the phenotypic traits of this complex clinical syndrome. Because of this, the prospect of simultaneous, genome wide, high-throughput analysis of gene expression in key brain areas potentially offers a novel strategy to identify new molecular treatment targets in this disease. 17. Experimental porcine models of retinal ischemia
Sammanfattning : Retinal ischaemia resulting from e.g. diabetes, vein thrombosis or arterial occlusion, is one of the major causes of visual impairment and blindness. Although new methods of treatment are being developed, there is still a need for more effective pharmacological forms of treatment. LÄS MER
18. Gastric and enteric Helicobacter species in animal models and in the human colon
Sammanfattning : The Gram-negative genus of Helicobacter consists of many bacterial species that colonize a wide range of animal hosts. The genus can be divided into gastric species that colonize the stomach, and enteric species that preferentially colonize the colon and biliary tree of various animal hosts. LÄS MER
19. Cognitive function studied in animal models of schizophrenia
Sammanfattning : Cognitive dysfunction is considered a core deficit of schizophrenia, which currently lacks effective pharmacological treatment. In order to identify novel and more effective drug treatments, translational experimental animal models of cognitive dysfunction are required. Schizophrenia-like symptoms can be induced in humans by phencyclidine (PCP). LÄS MER
20. Genetic analysis of autoimmune diseases using animal models : Mapping susceptibility genes for multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis are common human diseasesaffecting 1% and 0.1% of the population respectively. These diseases are characterized by abnormal self-tolerance in the immune system and autoimmune reactions. LÄS MER
