11. Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Optimization : Comparison and Evaluation of Non-invasive Methods
Sammanfattning : The general purpose of this thesis was to investigate new cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) optimization techniques and to assess their reliability when compared to invasive measurements of left ventricular contractility (LV dP/dtmax).We first assessed whether cardiac output (CO) measured by trans-thoracic impedance cardiography could correctly identify the optimal interventricular (VV) pacing interval while using invasive measurements of LV dP/dtmax as reference. 12. Integration of signalling in smooth muscle caveolae
Sammanfattning : Caveolae and lipid rafts are plasma membrane microdomains that are considered to play a role in cellular signalling. Caveolins and cavins as well as cholesterol are required for the structure and function of caveolae. The papers summarized in this thesis examine the role of caveolae in smooth muscle function. 14. Effects of ageing on contractility and myosin composition of rat and man skeletal muscles and muscle cells : with special reference to muscle adaptability
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to characterize the effects of ageing on the contractile and biochemical properties of fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscles at the whole muscle and single fibre level in an attempt to improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the age-related impairments of muscle fibres. Specific interest was in the adaptability of skeletal muscle and the regulation of speed of shortening at single-cell level in the rat and man. LÄS MER
15. Cardiac function in experimental septic and non-septic conditions with special reference to the endothelin system
Sammanfattning : Myocardial depression in sepsis has been intensely investigated for the past 30 years and still poses a considerable issue in the intensive care units. Both systolic and diastolic dysfunction is implicated, correlating with severity of illness and mortality The importance of the endothelin (ET) system in normal physiology has been extensively studied.
