  1. 1. Telomeres and the brain : an investigation into the relationships of leukocyte telomere length with functional and structural attributes of the brain

    Författare :Mikael Wikgren; Karl-Fredrik Norrback; Rolf Adolfsson; Göran Roos; Thomas Karlsson; Brenda Penninx; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; APOE; aging; atrophy; brain; cognition; cortisol; depression; hippocampus; HPA axis; MRI; stress; telomere length; white matter hyper-intensities.;

    Sammanfattning : Telomeres are the outermost parts of linear chromosomes. They consist of tandemly repeated non-coding short nucleotide sequences (TTAGGG in all vertebrates), in humans spanning over the last 2 to 15 kilobase pairs of the chromosome. Due to the end-replication problem, telomeres shorten with each cellular division. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Brain Tissue Oxygenation in Traumatic Brain Injury : Experimental and Clinical Studies

    Författare :Karlis Purins; Anders Lewén; Per Enblad; Oliver Sakowitz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brain tissue oxygenation; Cerebral metabolism; Traumatic brain injury; Cerebral ischemia; Threshold levels; Neurovent-PTO; Microdialysis; Neurosurgery; Neurokirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability. TBI is frequently followed by cerebral ischemia which is a great contributor to secondary brain damage. The main causes of cerebral ischemia are pathophysiological changes in cerebral blood flow and metabolism. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Apoptosis-related mechanisms in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia

    Författare :Xiaoyang Wang; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; caspase; ERK; XIAP; EPO; asialoEPO; brain;

    Sammanfattning : Aims: To characterize the activation of caspases-3 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the neonatal brain after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) injury and evaluate the neuroprotective effect of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) protein, erythropoietin (EPO) and the non-erythropoietic derivative asialoEPO. Methods: Seven-day-old rats or 9-day-old mice were subjected to HI. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Brain mechanisms in pain regulation

    Författare :Karin B Jensen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The subjective sensitivity to pain differs greatly between individuals and neuroimaging has contributed to the understanding of the cerebral mechanisms involved in pain regulation. The descending pain inhibitory circuitry is a well defined cerebral network that enables regulation of afferent nociceptive information. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Intracranial Pressure in Traumatic Brain Injury

    Författare :Sima Shahsavari; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Brain Swelling; Cerebral Autoregulation; Secondary Brain Injury; Traumatic Brain Injury; Cerebral Compliance; Intracranial Dynamics; Intracranial Pressure;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) continues to be a major problem worldwide. Today, intensive care of patients with TBI is mainely focused on preventing and treating secondary brain injuries. High pressure inside the intracranial cavity (ICP) has been found to be an important feature of disturbed cerebral dynamics and secondary injuries. LÄS MER
