16. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web
Sammanfattning : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. 17. Studies of Baltic Sea plankton - spatial and temporal patterns
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the spatial and temporal patterns of Baltic Sea phyto- and zooplankton. Studies of such patterns are important to gain a better understanding of the offshore nutrient dynamics of the Baltic Sea (Papers I and II) and how to manage eutrophication and invasive species in coastal areas (Papers III and IV). 18. Effects of inorganic nitrogen and organic carbon on pelagic food webs in boreal lakes
Sammanfattning : Anthropogenic activities are increasing inorganic nitrogen (N) loadings to lakes in the northern hemisphere. In many boreal lakes phytoplankton are N limited, wherefore enhanced N input may affect the productivity of pelagic food webs. LÄS MER
19. The ecology of the plankton fauna in the Gulf of Bothnia
Sammanfattning : The geographical distribution of the Gulf of Bothnia zooplankton species is presented together with observations of abundancies and vertical distributions. The historical development of this plankton community in the last 70 years is discussed.Spring and summer development of the plankton fauna was studiedin the Bothnian Bay. LÄS MER
20. Zooplankton growth and trophic linkages : Implications for fish feeding conditions in the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : The aim of this Thesis was to improve our understanding and assessment of feeding conditions for zooplanktivorous fish in the Baltic Sea.We investigated (papers I, II) the usefulness of biochemical proxies for assessments of growth and metabolic rates in the dominant Baltic copepod Acartia bifilosa.
