  1. 1. Phase transformation and surface chemistry of secondary iron minerals formed from acid mine drainage

    Författare :Jörgen Jönsson; Lars Lövgren; Per Persson; Staffan Sjöberg; Douglas B Kent; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Inorganic chemistry; schwertmannite; goethite; lepidocrocite; acid mine drainage; sulphate; natural organic matter; mineral surface; infrared spectroscopy; EXAFS; XRD; ternary surface complex; copper II ; cadmium II ; lead II ; zinc II ; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic chemistry; Oorganisk kemi; Inorganic Chemistry; oorganisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The mining of sulphidic ore to extract metals such as zinc and copper produces huge quantities of waste material. The weathering and oxidation of the waste produces what is commonly known as Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), a dilute sulphuric acid rich in Fe(II) and heavy metals. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Quantum Chemical Modeling of Binuclear Zinc Enzymes

    Författare :Shilu Chen; Fahmi Himo; Luca De Gioia; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quantum Chemical Modeling; Binuclear; Zinc; Enzyme; DFT; Mechanism; Theoretical chemistry; Teoretisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, the reaction mechanisms of several di-zinc hydrolases have been explored using quantum chemical modeling of the enzyme active sites. The studied enzymes are phosphotriesterase (PTE), aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP), glyoxalase II (GlxII), and alkaline phosphatase (AP). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Biochemical Studies of Semenogelins with Emphasis on Zinc-Binding Properties

    Författare :Magnus Jonsson; Malmö Klinisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sexualitet; sexuality; Obstetrik; gynekologi; andrologi; reproduction; andrology; gynaecology; Obstetrics; Klinisk kemi; Clinical chemistry; gel-forming proteins; surface plasmon resonance; prostate-specific antigen; protein C inhibitor; seminal plasma; zinc; semen; semenogelin; reproduktion;

    Sammanfattning : Semenogelins I and II (SgI and SgII) are homologous and rapidly evolving proteins that have a repetitive primary structure and are synthesized mainly in the seminal vesicles. Upon ejaculation, a gelatinous coagulum is formed when the semenogelin-rich secretion from the seminal vesicles is mixed with the prostate secretion, which contains high concentrations of zinc(II) and proteases. 4. 4. The initial atmospheric corrosion of copper and zinc induced by carboxylic acids : Quantitative in situ analysis and computer simulations

    Författare :Harveth Gil; Christofer Leygraf; Johan Tidblad; Stuart Lyon; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Atmospheric corrosion; copper; zinc; carboxylic acids; modeling; GILDES; in situ; quantification;

    Sammanfattning : Degradation of metals through atmospheric corrosion is a most important and costly phenomenon with significant effects on, e.g., the lifespan of industrial materials, the reliability of electronic components and military equipment, and the aesthetic appearance of our cultural heritage. 5. 5. The role of particles on initial atmospheric corrosion of copper and zinc : lateral distribution, secondary spreading and CO2-/SO2-influence

    Författare :Zhuo Yuan Chen; Christofer Leygraf; Jan-Erik Svensson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; atmospheric corrosion; copper; zinc; NaCl particles; NH4 2SO4; Materials chemistry; Materialkemi;

    Sammanfattning : The role of sodium chloride (NaCl) particles and ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) particles on the initial atmospheric corrosion of copper and zinc was investigated under in situ and ex situ conditions using microgravimetry, FTIR spectroscopy, ion chromatography, scanning electron microscopy with x-ray microanalysis and the scanning Kelvin probe. For the first time, in situ infrared spectra were collected on a micron level during particle induced atmospheric corrosion using a recently developed experimental set-up for in situ FTIR microspectroscopy.
