  1. 1. Elovl3 and very long chain fatty acids; role in metabolism

    Författare :Andreas Jakobsson; Anders Jacobsson; James Ntambi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fatty acids metabolism elongation; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Fatty acids (FA) are important in several aspects of cellular function, for example as structural molecules and metabolic substrates. The bulk of FA up to 16 carbons (palmitic acid) in length are synthesised by a cytosolic enzyme complex called fatty acid synthase (FAS), while FA can be further elongated into very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) by membrane-bound enzymes in the endoplasmatic reticulum (ER). 2. 2. Ethanol from lignocellulose : physiological effects of inhibitors and fermentation strategies

    Författare :Mohammad J Taherzadeh; Chalmers Univ of Technology; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Acetic acid; Agents; Cellulose; Enzyme inhibition; Feedback control; Fermentation; Hydrolysis; Metabolites; pH; Physiology; Wood; Yeast; Dilute acid hydrolyzate; Inhibitors; Lignocellulose; Physiological effects; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; Ethanol;

    Sammanfattning : Fermentative ethanol production from dilute-acid hydrolyzates of wood using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated. Of known inhibitors in hydrolyzates, acetic acid, furfural and hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) were found in the highest concentrations (up to about 10 g/l). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Fermentation of lignocellulosic material : a study on bacterial contamination and yeast physiology

    Författare :Emma Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast physiology; energy metabolism; Lignocellulosic bioethanol; bacterial contamination;

    Sammanfattning : Progressive depletion of oil and conventional fossil fuels, an increased energy demand and an increased struggle for national energy security has led to the development of alternative biobased fuels, bioethanol being one of them. Bioethanol can be made from many different raw materials, and based upon this are classified as 1st generation and 2nd generation. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Analysis and Control of Continuous Microaerobic Ethanol Production by Yeast

    Författare :Carl Johan Franzén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitrogen limitation; ethanol; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; glycerol; metabolic flux analysis; oxygen limitation; stoichiometric model; yeast physiology; RQ control;

    Sammanfattning : Glucose fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and xylose fermentation by Candida utilis and Pichia stipitis, were investigated under microaerobic conditions. A dynamic experimental method named oxygen programmed fermentation (OPF), and a method for microaerobic RQ control in continuous culture have been developed. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Evolution of Yeast Respiro-Fermentative Lifestyle and the Underlying Mechanisms Behind Aerobic Fermentation

    Författare :Arne Hagman; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Crabtree effect; aerobic fermentation; respiro-fermentation; ethanol production; yeast; central carbon metabolism; evolution of alternative lifestyles;

    Sammanfattning : Under aerobic conditions, most yeasts such as Kluyveromyces lactis, prefer the respiratory pathway and some, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae prefer less energy efficient fermentative pathway for their energy metabolism. These two metabolic strategies are also known as Crabtree negative and Crabtree positive respectively, and the evolution of the latter has lately been explained by the “make-accumulate-consume” life strategy.
