  1. 1. Concepts for improving ethanol productivity from lignocellulosic materials : encapsulated yeast and membrane bioreactors

    Författare :Päivi Ylitervo; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Encapsulated yeast; Biofuel; S. cerevisiae; Membrane bioreactors; Thermotolerance; Furfural; Acetic acid; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning; Resource Recovery;

    Sammanfattning : Lignocellulosic biomass is a potential feedstock for production of sugars, which can be fermented into ethanol. The work presented in this thesis proposes some solutions to overcome problems with suboptimal process performance due to elevated cultivation temperatures and inhibitors present during ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials. 2. 2. Ethanol production from lignocellulose using high local cell density yeast cultures. Investigations of flocculating and encapsulated Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Författare :Johan Westman; Högskolan i Borås; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; yeast; encapsulation; lignocellulose; ethanol; fermentation; flocculation; inhibitors; tolerance; xylose; co-utilisation; Resource Recovery; Resursåtervinning; Resource Recovery;

    Sammanfattning : Efforts are made to change from 1st to 2nd generation bioethanol production, using lignocellulosics as raw materials rather than using raw materials that alternatively can be used as food sources. An issue with lignocellulosics is that a harsh pretreatment step is required in the process of converting them into fermentable sugars. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Metabolic Engineering of Recombinant Protein Production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Författare :Zihe Liu; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; recombinant protein production; genome sequencing; DNA microarray; insulin precursor; growth rate; UV mutation; yeast; anaerobic electron acceptor; secretory pathway; unfolded protein response; metabolic engineering; systems biology; α-amylase;

    Sammanfattning : The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a widely used cell factory for the production of fuels, chemicals, and it also provides a platform for the production of many heterologous proteins of medical or industrial interest. In this thesis, random and rational approaches, such as vector design, host engineering, fermentation analysis, UV Mutation, coupled with high-throughput systems biology techniques (including whole genomic sequencing, microarray analysis and flux analysis) and integrated analysis (Reporter feature technique), were employed to engineer cellular properties more effectively and purposefully to construct cell factories for protein production. 4. 4. Engineered Yeast as Biocatalyst for Stereoselective reductions of Dicarbonyl Compounds

    Författare :Ted Johanson; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; chiral; screening; process optimisation; metabolic engineering; dicarbonyl; biocatalysis; yeast; bioreduction; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Chiral building blocks are needed in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries for the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. The utilisation of microorganisms and enzymes to perform stereoselective reductions of carbonyl compounds is an efficient and widely applied method for the generation of chiral molecules. LÄS MER

  5. 5. On Folates in Yeasts -Exploring Yeasts as Vehicles for Biofortification of Folates in Food

    Författare :Sofia Hjortmo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; yeast; B vitamin; biofortification; bread; indigenous food; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; folic acid; fermented food; togwa; Folate;

    Sammanfattning : High intake of the B vitamin folate during pregnancy is known to decrease the risk for development of neural tube defects. In addition, a good folate status may prevent the progression of several diseases such as megaloblastic anaemia, cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. LÄS MER
