  1. 6. Cross-functional brain imaging of attention, memory, and executive functions : Unity and diversity of neurocognitive component processes

    Författare :Petter Marklund; Lars Nyberg; Akira Miyake; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Human memory; executive functions; prefrontal cortex; sustained and transient neural activity; declarative long-term memory; attention; working memory; functional neuroimaging; cognitive control.; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Sammanfattning : The central theme of the present thesis revolves around the exploration of similarities and differences in brain activity patterns invoked by the component processes underlying mnemonic, executive and attentional functions. The primary aim was to identify and functionally characterize commonly recruited brain regions in terms of shared component processes, which has been a largely neglected area of research in cognitive neuroscience. 2. 7. Cognition in Hearing Aid Users : Memory for Everyday Speech

    Författare :Hoi Ning Elaine Ng; Jerker Rönnberg; Mary Rudner; Thomas Lunner; Kevin Munro; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Hearing aid; working memory; free recall; noise reduction; speech recognition; Hörapparat; arbetsminne; återgivning; brusreducering; taluppfattning;

    Sammanfattning : The thesis investigated the importance of cognition for speech understanding in experienced and new hearing aid users. The aims were 1) to develop a cognitive test (Sentence-final Word Identification and Recall, or SWIR test) to measure the effects of a noise reduction algorithm on processing of highly intelligible speech (everyday sentences); 2) to investigate, using the SWIR test, whether hearing aid signal processing would affect memory for heard speech in experienced hearing aid users; 3) to test whether the effects of signal processing on the ability to recall speech would interact with background noise and individual differences in working memory capacity; 4) to explore the potential clinical application of the SWIR test; and 5) to examine the relationship between cognition and speech recognition in noise in new users over the first six months of hearing aid use. 3. 8. The neural substrates of non-conscious working memory

    Författare :Fredrik Bergström; Johan Eriksson; Lars Nyberg; René Marois; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; non-conscious; working memory; neural substrates; visual perception; consciousness; functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI ;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Despite our distinct impression to the contrary, we are only conscious of a fraction of all the neural activity underlying our thoughts and behavior. Most neural processes occur non-consciously, and in parallel with our conscious experience. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Memory for Problem Solving: Comparative Studies in Attention, Working and Long-term Memory

    Författare :Katarzyna Bobrowicz; LUCS grupp för kognitiv zoologi; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; memory; flexibility; comparative cognition; transfer; problem solving; attention;

    Sammanfattning : Living in a complex and dynamically changing environment requires accurate and timely behavioural responses that allow for adapting to such changes. Well-developed perceptual systems provide a continuous flow of abundant and up-to-date information on the changes in the environment, and, thereby, allow for tailoring behavioural responses accordingly. 5. 10. Experimental studies of human-computer interaction : working memory and mental workload in complex cognition

    Författare :Erik Wästlund; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Information processing; Problem-solving; Working memory; ST-WM; LT-WM; Dual-task; Mental workload; Reading; Page layout; VDT; Convergent; Divergent; Psykologi; Psychology; Information processing; Problem-solving; Working memory; ST-WM; LT-WM;

    Sammanfattning : Complex cognition is readily described as cognitive tasks requiring the coordination of multiple steps of processing or tasks exceeding short term memory capacity. Similarly, mental workload may be described as the use and temporary expenditure of a finite amount of information processing capacity. LÄS MER
