1. Ectomycorrhizal community structure and function in relation to forest residue harvesting and wood ash applications
Sammanfattning : Ectomycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with tree roots and assist in nutrient-uptake and -cycling in forest ecosystems, thereby constituting a most significant part of the microbial community. The aims of the studies described in this thesis were to evaluate the potential of DNA-based molecular methods in below-ground ectomycorrhizal community studies and to investigate changes in ectomycorrhizal communities on spruce roots in sites with different N deposition, and in sites subjected to harvesting of forest residues or application of wood ash. 2. Effects of wood ash on freshwater organisms and aquatic forest ecosystems
Sammanfattning : Wood ash application (WAA) has been recommended mainly for two reasons; i) to avoid depletion of minerals in the soil due to whole tree harvest in the forestry and ii) to mitigate harmful effects of acidification of soil and surface waters. In conclusion, the effects on terrestrial ecosystems and, especially, tree growth, can be attributed to the properties of the ash, the dose applied and the specific site at which the ash is applied. 3. Chemical Properties of FBC Ashes
Sammanfattning : In this thesis several aspects of ash chemistry are discussed. An issue of primary concern for boiler operators is the formation of ash deposits. New biomass fuels are introduced, many of which have unfavourable ash melting behaviour due to high levels of alkali metal species and chlorine. LÄS MER
4. Automated Manufacture of Fertilizing Agglomerates from Burnt Wood Ash
Sammanfattning : In Sweden, extensive research is conducted to find alternative sources of energy that should partly replace the electric power production from nuclear power. With the ambition to create a sustainable system for producing energy, the use of renewable energy is expected to grow further and biofuels are expected to account for a significant part of this increase. 5. Ash Products for Nutrient Recycling in Forestry : Leaching and Drying Characteristics
Sammanfattning : As the demand for carbon dioxide neutral energy sources increases, forestry becomes more intensive. Entire trees are removed from the felling sites threatening the nutrient balance of the forest soils. LÄS MER
