  1. 1. Synchrotron-based characterization of mechanobiological effects on the nanoscale in musculoskeletal tissues

    Författare :Isabella Silva Barreto; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nanoscale; microscale; mechanical properties; synchrotron; x-ray imaging; collagen; hydroxyapatite; biomechanics; experimental mechanics; x-ray tomography; small-angle x-ray scattering SAXS ; wide-angle x-ray scattering WAXS ; x-ray fluorescence XRF ; small-angle x-ray scattering tensor tomography SASTT ; Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy FTIR ; polarized light microscopy PLM ; bone development; Achilles tendon; tendon healing;

    Sammanfattning : Collagen is the main organic building block of musculoskeletal tissues. Despite collagen being their smallest load bearing unit, these tissues differ significantly in mechanical function and properties. A major factor behind these differences is their hierarchical organization, from the collagen molecule up to the organ scale. LÄS MER

  2. 2. X-Ray Diagnostics in Combustion - Study of Particle Formation in Flames Using Combined Small- and Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering

    Författare :Linda Vallenhag; Förbränningsfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nanoparticles; soot particles; WAXS; X-ray scattering; SAXS; combustion; Fysicumarkivet A:2014:Vallenhag;

    Sammanfattning : In the thesis work, two X-ray scattering techniques, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) were combined to study particle formation in-situ and non-intrusively in ethylene laboratory flames. Combining these two techniques enabled information concerning the size and concentration as well as the subnanometer structure of the nanoparticles within the 1–100 nm range there to be obtained. 3. 3. Conformational Dynamics of Rhodopsins Visualized by Time-resolved Wide Angle X-ray Scattering

    Författare :Erik Malmerberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Time-resolved wide Angle X-ray Scattering; Retinylidene proteins; Rhodopsin; Bacteriorhodopsin; Proteorhodopsin;

    Sammanfattning : Rhodopsins are a family of light-sensitive proteins found in the cellular membranes of a wide range of living organisms. These membrane proteins share a common molecular architecture and are able to use light energy to perform a variety of different biological functions. LÄS MER

  4. 4. X-ray free-electron laser based methods for structural and ultrafast dynamics studies of a photosynthetic reaction centre

    Författare :David Arnlund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; WAXS; wide-angle x-ray scattering; XFEL; x-ray free-electron laser; reaction center; structural biology; ultrafast dynamics;

    Sammanfattning : Life on earth is fuelled by the energy of sunlight, which must first be captured and converted into a chemical energy form useful to the cell. This process is known as photosynthesis and the major pathway of this energy conversion is via photosynthetic reaction centres. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Multiscale X-ray Characterisation of Cellulose-based Solid Dispersions

    Författare :Martina Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PXCT; WAXS; pharmaceutical formulations; multiscale characterisation; STXM; radiation damage; SAXS; X-ray imaging; solid dispersions; cellulose;

    Sammanfattning : Cellulose-based solid dispersions are a promising formulation strategy for providing controlled drug release and dissolution enhancement of poorly soluble drugs. These dispersions can from structures on multiple length scales which can have both positive and negative effects on the functional properties of the formulation. LÄS MER
