6. Data preparation, hydrodynamic and contaminant transport shallow-water simulations of Lake Victoria
Sammanfattning : This study explores shallow lake numerical hydrodynamic processes that support model development and validation, extreme events and effects of water circulation in Lake Victoria. Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater lake in the world, and the largest in East Africa. LÄS MER
7. Water and Carbon Balance Modeling: Methods of Uncertainty Analysis
Sammanfattning : How do additional data of the same and/or different type contribute to reducing model parameter and predictive uncertainties? This was the question addressed with two models – the HBV hydrological water balance model and the ICBM soil carbon balance model – that were used to investigate the usefulness of the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) method for calibrations and uncertainty analyses. The GLUE method is based on threshold screening of Monte Carlo simulations using so-called informal likelihood measures and subjective acceptance criterion. LÄS MER
8. Groundwater resources in hard rock coastal terrains : Insights into heterogeneity and spatial variability
Sammanfattning : Challenges regarding water security in hard rock coastal regions with limited soil cover are: a seasonal absence of recharge during times of peak residency, heterogeneity and variability of the fracture network, close proximity to saline water sources and spatially inconsistent storage and extraction. In areas where it is not feasible to connect residents to municipal water systems, a better understanding of the resilience of reservoirs is needed. LÄS MER
9. Modelling Hydrological and Hydrodynamic Processes in Lake Tana Basin, Ethiopia
Sammanfattning : Lake Tana Basin is of significant importance to Ethiopia concerning water resources aspects and the ecological balance of the area. The growing high demands in utilizing the high potentials of water resource of the Lake to its maximal limit, pictures a disturbing future for the Lake. LÄS MER
10. Biogeochemical Processes in Denitrifying Woodchip Bioreactors and their Application in the Mining Industry
Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluates passive denitrifying woodchip bioreactors (DWBs) for the removal of nitrate (NO3-) in neutral pH mine drainage, where water is passed through a carbon-rich porous matrix (e.g. woodchips) for the reduction of NO3- to nitrogen gas. LÄS MER
