1. Studies on the barrier properties of exterior wood coatings
Sammanfattning : Coatings for exterior wood have two basic functions. One isto give an aesthetically acceptable surface appearance andcolour. The other is to provide protection against wooddegradation by microbiological or physical attack. LÄS MER
2. Luminescence properties of flexible conjugated dyes
Sammanfattning : In this licentiate thesis the luminescence properties of two flexible conjugated dyes have been studied. The first, Pt1, is a platinum(II) acetylide chromophore used in optical power limiting materials. LÄS MER
3. Simulation of Core-Level Spectra of H-bonded Systems
Sammanfattning : The thesis consists of three related projects where attempts have been made to simulate X-Ray Absorption (XAS) spectra of water and hexagonal ice, static non-resonant X-ray Emission (XES) spectrum of water and to apply the semi-classical approximation to Kramers-Heisenberg formula (SCKH) formalism to calculate the non-resonant XES spectrum of water and methanol. The first project is devoted to an investigation of the performance of damped response theory in combination with the DFT electronic structure method (CPP-DFT) in XAS spectrum simulations of liquid water. 4. The adsorption of arsenic oxyacids to iron oxyhydroxide columns : including studies of weakly hydrated ions and molecules in aqueous solution
Sammanfattning : The fundamental side of this project includes determination of ionic radii and plausible hydration numbers for the weakly hydrated alkali metal ions in solution, as well as an investigation of the intramolecular bond lengths of arsenic oxyacid species and orthotelluric acid. Experimental methods such as EXAFS, XANES and LAXS have been used for these purposes, as well as thorough screening for relevant structures in crystal structure databases. LÄS MER
5. Interactions between non-polar surfaces in water: Fokus on talc, pitch and surface roughness effects
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the interactions between talc mineral and surfaces, liquids and chemicals relevant for industrial applications, such as pulp and paper. Talc is used in the pulp and paper industry as a filler pigment, in control of pitch (lipophilic extractives) deposits and as a coating pigment. LÄS MER
