11. Applying Industrial Ecology in Urban Planning for the local integration of data centers
Sammanfattning : The data center industry’s rapid development raises questions about how to regulate data center locations and expansion, becoming a matter of high concern regarding Urban Planning. Data center facilities are commonly located and scaled (regarding power and size) responding to business profitability interests steered by the global market. LÄS MER
12. Use of Switchable Carbamate Surfactants for Design of Reversible Colouring of Cotton
Sammanfattning : Circularity of materials is a global need. However, recycling of cotton often requires many steps involving chemical or mechanical treatments. According to the waste hierarchy, reuse is a more environmentally benign approach than recycling, giving extended lifecycles with only limited processing of materials. LÄS MER
13. Runtime Management of Multiprocessor Systems for Fault Tolerance, Energy Efficiency and Load Balancing
Sammanfattning : Efficiency of modern multiprocessor systems is hurt by unpredictable events: aging causes permanent faults that disable components; application spawnings and terminations taking place at arbitrary times, affect energy proportionality, causing energy waste; load imbalances reduce resource utilization, penalizing performance. This thesis demonstrates how runtime management can mitigate the negative effects of unpredictable events, making decisions guided by a combination of static information known in advance and parameters that only become known at runtime. 14. Regulatory function of homeobox genes in the development of C. elegans
Sammanfattning : The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans has been widely used as a genetic model for over 40 years to investigate developmental control genes. In this thesis, I studied the roles of several homeobox genes and a novel RNA binding protein (RBD) in the development of C. elegans to understand the function of these genes in higher organisms. 15. Spatial-Temporal Patterns of Urban Growth in Shanghai, China: Monitoring, Analysis, and Simulation
Sammanfattning : Supporting huge population, megacities are definitely the hot spots of production, consumption, and waste generation. Without careful investment and planning, megacities will be overwhelmed by burgeoning negative impacts on the environment, natural resources, and human health, as well as a host of social and economic issues.
