  1. 1. Composition of lignin in outer cell-wall layers

    Författare :Maria Christiernin; Gunnar Henriksson; Gösta Brunow; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lignin; thioacidolysis; primary wall; middle lamella; Populus balsamifera; Populus tremula L. x P. tremuloides Michx.; Picea abies; Picea glauca; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The composition of lignin in the outer cell-wall layers of spruce and poplar has been studied and the data obtained have been compared with those of the mature reference wood in which the secondary cell wall predominates. Materials with exclusively or predominantly outer cell-wall layers were examined. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Solids Flow Pattern in Circulating Fluidized-bed Boilers

    Författare :Andreas Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; scale-up; hydrodynamics; combustion; loop seal; wall-layers; Circulating Fluidized Bed;

    Sammanfattning : The background of this dissertation is the knowledge of circulating fluidized bed (CFB)technology, which has reached a level enabling units of several hundred megawatts ofelectricity to be constructed and employed. Yet an improved understanding of the technologyis needed in order to further develop and optimize large-scale combustion in CFB boilers,especially since the operating conditions and the geometries of large boilers differ from thosetypical for laboratory units, in which most of the research hitherto has been performed. 3. 3. Cellular Control and Physiological Importance of Vascular Lignification

    Författare :Leonard Blaschek; Edouard Pesquet; Richard Sibout; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Lignin is indispensable for vascular plants. It allows their cells to coalesce into gravity-defying giants, hardens them to withstand pressures and predators, and waterproofs them to allow the flow of water only where it is advantageous. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Carotid Artery Wall Layer Dimensions during and after Pre-eclampsia : An investigation using non-invasive high-frequency ultrasound

    Författare :Tansim Akhter; Tord Naessen; Anna-Karin Wikström; Henry Nisell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Systemic lupus erythematosus; normal pregnancy; pre-eclampsia; high-frequency ultrasound; common carotid artery; intima media ratio; cardiovascular disease.; Obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Sammanfattning : Pre-eclampsia is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) later in life. The ‘gold standard’ for estimating cardiovascular risk - ultrasound assessment of the common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) - does not convincingly demonstrate this increased risk. 5. 5. Artery Wall Imaging and Effects of Postmenopausal Estrogen Therapy

    Författare :Kenny A. Rodriguez-Macias Wallberg; Tord Naessén; Lars-Åke Mattsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; artery wall thickness; tunica media; tunica intima; arterial stiffness; carotid; aorta; cardiovascular disease; atherosclerosis; menopause; estrogen; hormone therapy; ultrasound; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause.
