1. Walking ability, balance and accidental falls in persons with Multiple Sclerosis
Sammanfattning : By using a pragmatic paradigm, different research methodologies were employed in this thesis. MS-related symptoms may be exaggerated due to heatsensitivity and it is supposed that cooling garments relieve the symptoms. LÄS MER
2. Urban outdoor lighting : Pedestrian perception, evaluation and behaviour in the lit environment
Sammanfattning : Walking plays an essential role in sustainable transport systems, as nearly all journeys in the urban environment incorporate walking in one way or another. In parts of the world, for long periods of the year, seasonal variation in daylight hours means that pedestrians must rely on outdoor lighting to make cities accessible after dark. LÄS MER
3. Physical Training and Testing in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Sammanfattning : The overall aims of the studies were to investigate the effects of different training modalities on exercise capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with moderate or severe COPD and, further, to explore two of the physical tests used in pulmonary rehabilitation. In study I, the 12-minute walking distance (12MWD) did not increase on retesting in patients with exercise-induced hypoxemia (EIH) whereas 12MWD increased significantly on retesting in the non-EIH patients. 4. Dizziness, balance and rehabilitation in vestibular disorders
Sammanfattning : Dizziness and balance problems are common symptoms at all ages. The aims were; to evaluate rehabilitation, static, dynamic balance and recovery in acute unilateral vestibular loss (AUVL), to evaluate the treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) with assessment of static and dynamic balance and to evaluate the prevalence of dizziness and BPPV in a population of 75-year-olds. 5. Studies on energy expenditure in walking after stroke
Sammanfattning : After stroke, altered movement pattern involves low walking speed and increased energy cost as compared to normal. Cardiovascular disease is common in the stroke population. Knowledge about the physiological demands of various training interventions is important for the planning of exercise. LÄS MER
