1. Diet and common neurological disorders: cohort studies on dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke
Sammanfattning : Risk factors for dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke have been widely studied but there are still research gaps concerning the role of diet for the development of these diseases. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate whether various aspects of diet are associated with common disorders and diseases in the brain. LÄS MER
2. Thiamine dynamics in the pelagic food web of the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : Thiamine (vitamin B1) is involved in several basal metabolic processes. It is an essential compound for many organisms and in aquatic systems it is mainly produced by phytoplankton and prokaryotes and transferred to higher trophic levels through grazing and predation. LÄS MER
3. Diet and gastrointestinal cancer : one-carbon metabolism and other aspects
Sammanfattning : Diet has been hypothesized to play a major role in the etiology of gastrointestinal cancer, but the specific dietary factors involved remain unclear. The aims of this thesis were: to examine the associations of dietary magnesium and vitamin B6 intakes with risk of colorectal cancer in the Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC); to evaluate the relation between folate intake and risk of pancreatic cancer in the SMC and the Cohort of Swedish Men (COSM); to use metaanalysis to summarize the evidence from published studies of the associations of folate intake and polymorphisms in the gene encoding 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR C677T and A1298C), a central enzyme in one-carbon metabolism, with risk of esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, and colorectal cancer; and to perform a meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies of the relationship between processed meat consumption and risk of gastric cancer. 4. Diet and ovarian cancer : a population-based cohort of 60 000 women
Sammanfattning : Ovarian cancer represents the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women in Western countries. Hence, identification of risk factors amenable to modification, such as diet, is of considerable public health relevance as it could provide means for primary prevention of this malignancy. LÄS MER
5. Ultraviolet radiation cataract development and ascorbate supplementation
Sammanfattning : Background: Cataract is the major cause of blindness in the world, and long-term solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a major risk factor. The pathogenesis of UVRinduced cataract is studied in various animal models and cell systems. LÄS MER
