1. Dynamics of astaxanthin, tocopherol (Vitamin E) and thiamine (Vitamin B1) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem : Bottom-up effects in an aquatic food web
Sammanfattning : The thesis combines laboratory experiments and field expeditions to study production, transfer and consumption of non-enzymatic antioxidants and thiamine in an aquatic food web. In particular, I (1) documented spatial and seasonal variation of tocopherols and carotenoids in the Baltic Sea pelagic food web, and (2) examined the effects of abiotic and biotic factors on tocopherol, carotenoid and thiamine concentrations in phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish. 2. Fibroblast growth factor-23 and Klotho in bone/mineral and parathyroid disorders
Sammanfattning : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is a novel, bone-produced hormone that regulates renal phosphate (Pi) reabsorption and calcitriol metabolism. Disorders of mineral and bone metabolism, such as autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets (ADHR) and hyperostosis-hyperphosphatemia syndrome (HHS), witness the importance of well-balanced serum levels of FGF23. 3. Risk factors in type 2 diabetes with emphasis on blood pressure, physical activity and serum vitamin D
Sammanfattning : BackgroundType 2 diabetes is a common chronic disease with a two-fold increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and has an increasing prevalence worldwide. This thesis is based on a study conducted in primary health care in Östergötland and Jönköping, Sweden. LÄS MER
4. Functional studies on the orphan receptor Nurr1 and related retinoid receptors
Sammanfattning : Nuclear receptors (NRs) constitute a large family of ligand-inducible transcription factors which includes receptors for steroid hormones, retinoids (vitamin A derivatives), vitamin D an d thyroid hormone. The family also includes a large number of structurally related proteins that lack identified ligands and are therefore refered to as orphan receptors. LÄS MER
5. Physical Exercise in Cystic Fibrosis -studies on muscle strength, oxygen uptake and lung function in young adult patients
Sammanfattning : Muscular strength, lung function and exercise capacity are internationally reported to be markedly impaired in adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Since 20 years physical exercise is one important part in the treatment of patients with CF in Sweden. Handgrip strength is reported to relate to nutrition and activity of daily living. LÄS MER
