  1. 1. Chemical attenuation of bacterial virulence : small molecule inhibitors of type III secretion

    Författare :Anna Kauppi; Mikael Elofsson; Anders Karlén; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; antibiotic resistance; virulence; type III secretion; T3SS inhibitors; Yop; SMD; QSAR; screening; Yersinia pseudotuberculosis; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Despite the large arsenal of antibiotics available on the market, treatment of bacterial infections becomes more challenging in view of the fact that microbes develop resistance against existing drugs. There is an obvious need for novel drugs acting on both old and new targets in bacteria. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Foodborne Virulence: Staphylococcus aureus Enterotoxins A and D

    Författare :Nina Wallin; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; environmental factors; phage-encoded virulence; in vivo; enterotoxin D; enterotoxin A; gene expression; Staphylococcus aureus; virulence;

    Sammanfattning : The development of new, minimally processed food products challenges traditional concepts of food safety. How pathogenic bacteria behave in these new matrices is not known. To fill this knowledge gap and enable the production of food that is safe for the consumer, more information on virulence expression of pathogens in food matrices is required. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Streptococcal virulence and the coagulation system

    Författare :Kristofer Wollein Waldetoft; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococci; virulence; coagulation; intrinsic pathway; evolution;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis explores streptococcal virulence from both mechanistic and evolutionary perspectives, where the mechanistic studies focus on interactions with the human coagulation system. We describe interactions between streptococcal surface proteins and components of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the kallikrein-kinin system in human plasma, as well as to how these surface proteins are produced in different growth phases. Sammanfattning : Pathogenic Yersinia cause a manifold of diseases in humans ranging from mild gastroenteritis (Y. pseudotuberculosis and Y. enterocolitica) to pneumonic and bubonic plague (Y. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Stress response and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum

    Författare :Barbara Weber; Debra L. Milton; James D. Oliver; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrio anguillarum; quorum sensing; Type VI secretion; stress response; virulence; skin colonization; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO.
