21. Lactobacillus in semi-hard cheese and their use as adjunct cultures
Sammanfattning : The microflora of Herrgård cheese produced at three dairies was compared after three and six months maturation. The microflora of cheeses from two of the dairies was dominated by a spontaneous microflora of Lactobacillus after three months of ripening, while starter bacteria still dominated in cheese from the third dairy after six months. 22. Surface proteins of pathogenic streptococci
Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) and the group B streptococcus (GBS) are two important human pathogens that cause different types of diseases and express different surface structures implicated in virulence. This thesis focuses on several surface proteins expressed by these pathogens, analyzing the biological function of these proteins and their ability to elicit protective immunity. LÄS MER
23. Retroviral long Terminal Repeats; Structure, Detection and Phylogeny
Sammanfattning : Long terminal repeats (LTRs) are non-coding repeats flanking the protein-coding genes of LTR retrotransposons. The variability of LTRs poses a challenge in studying them. Hidden Markov models (HMMs), probabilistic models widely used in pattern recognition, are useful in dealing with this variability. LÄS MER
24. Genes for cytochrome c and cytochrome c oxidase synthesis in Bacillus subtilis
Sammanfattning : Cytochromes are heme-containing proteins that function in electron transfer reactions, e.g. respiration and photosynthesis. There are several different types of cytochromes. LÄS MER
25. New innovative methods for non-intrusive optical diagnostics of high-voltage insulator materials
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this PhD thesis work has been to develop optical techniques that can help utility engineers for assessing the state of insulators in service and in a laboratory. The possibilities to use remote laser induced fluorescence for detection and imaging of biological growth such as algae and fungi have been investigated. LÄS MER
