1. Vessel wall integrity : influence of genetics and flow
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the major cause of death worldwide. Underlying causes, such as atherosclerosis and hypertension, are associated with remodeling of the vessel wall ultimately leading to loss of structural integrity. There are a number of factors that can influence vascular remodeling and hence structural integrity. LÄS MER
2. Carotid Vessel Wall Thickness and Echogenicity : In the ULSAM study
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the common carotid artery intima media thickness in nearly 500 elderly men is independently associated with insulin sensitivity, measured by the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test (paper 1), to both COX- and cytokine mediated inflammation independently of other markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and antioxidant status (paper 2) and also to the alleles of the apolipoprotein gene independently of lipid levels and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 3). The echogenicity of the carotid intima-media complex measured as grey scale median predicts mortality independently of common carotid artery intima-media thickness, prior cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 4). 3. Quantification of Arterial Wall with MRI and Image Processing
Sammanfattning : Quantification of atherosclerosis in vivo in animal models is of great importance when treatments against atherosclerosis are evaluated. In the studies presented in this thesis a non-invasive method combining MRI and image processing is evaluated. LÄS MER
4. Experimental studies of tearing mode and resistive wall mode dynamics in the reversed field pinch configuration
Sammanfattning : It is relatively straightforward to establish equilibrium inmagnetically confined plasmas, but the plasma is frequentlysucceptible to a variety of instabilities that are driven bythe free energy in the magnetic field or in the pressuregradient. These unstable modes exhibit effects that affect theparticle, momentum and heat confinement properties of theconfiguration. LÄS MER
5. Injury-induced activation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Role of specific gene expression and intracellular signalling pathways
Sammanfattning : Migration and proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMC) are important events in the development of atherosclerosis and restenosis following angioplastic surgery. It is important to gain further knowledge about the mechanisms regulating SMC form and function in order to understand the underlying disease process. LÄS MER
