  1. 1. Diffusion of Radionuclides in Bentonite Clay : Laboratory and in sity Studies

    Författare :Mats Jansson; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bentonite; montmorillonite; cation; anion; diffusion; sorption; cobalt; caesium; strontium; iodide; pertechnetate; surface diffusion; in situ; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the diffusion of ions in compactedbentonite clay. Laboratory experiments were performed toexamine in detail different processes that affect thediffusion. To demonstrate that the results obtained from thelaboratory investigations are valid under in situ conditions,two different kinds of in situ experiments were performed. LÄS MER

  2. 2. High-Performance Finite Element Methods : with Application to Simulation of Diffusion MRI and Vertical Axis Wind Turbines

    Författare :Van-Dang Nguyen; Johan Hoffman; Johan Jansson; Axel Målqvist; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; High performance finite element method; computational diffusion MRI; turbulent flow; vertical axis wind turbine.; Computer Science; Datalogi;

    Sammanfattning : The finite element methods (FEM) have been developed over decades, and together with the growth of computer engineering, they become more and more important in solving large-scale problems in science and industry. The objective of this thesis is to develop high-performance finite element methods (HP-FEM), with two main applications in mind: computational diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and simulation of the turbulent flow past a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). Sammanfattning : It is widely known that surfaces play an important role in numerous biological processes and technological applications. Thus, being able to modify surface properties provides an opportunity to control many phenomena occurring at interfaces. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Water density impact on water flow and mass transport in rock fractures

    Författare :Helen Winberg-Wang; Longcheng Liu; Ivars Neretnieks; Andrew Frampton; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Tracer experiments; solute transport in fractured rock; advection-diffusion experiments; repositories; equivalent flowrate.; Spårämnesexperiment; ämnestransport i bergssprickor; advektion och diffusionsexperiment; slutförvar; ekvivalent flöde.;

    Sammanfattning : One way of taking care of spent nuclear fuel is to place it in a geological repository. In Sweden, a three-barrier system is planned. The system is based on encapsulating the fuel in copper canisters. These are surrounded by bentonite clay and buried under 500 m of bedrock. LÄS MER
