8. Mind in Action : Action Representation and the Perception of Biological Motion
Sammanfattning : The ability to understand and communicate about the actions of others is a fundamental aspect of our daily activity. How can we talk about what others are doing? What qualities do different actions have such that they cause us to see them as being different or similar? What is the connection between what we see and the development of concepts and words or expressions for the things that we see? To what extent can two different people see and talk about the same things? Is there a common basis for our perception, and is there then a common basis for the concepts we form and the way in which the concepts become lexicalized in language? The broad purpose of this thesis is to relate aspects of perception, categorization and language to action recognition and conceptualization. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : Human life frequently involves spatial orientation and motion, and natural languages express manifold aspects of spatial perception in diverse ways. The articles included in this thesis delve into several of these aspects and explore space and motion from multiple perspectives, ranging from a dedicated field study of within-language variation systems to cross-linguistic comparisons of various orientation and motion aspects. 10. Expresiones de movimiento en español como segunda lengua y como lengua heredada : Conceptualización y entrega del Camino, la Manera y la Base
Sammanfattning : The current thesis is based on four individual studies which aim to account for the expression of motion events (ME) in Spanish and Swedish as first languages (L1), in Swedish as a second language (L2), and in Spanish as a heritage language (SHL). The data, resulting from audio-recordings of different sorts of stimuli, have been analyzed with special focus on (1) the most common structures used for referring to various types of ME, (2) the types and amount of information provided by the participants, in particular as regards the semantic components Path, Manner and Ground, and (3) grammatical aspect and types of syntactic structures resorted to, including the correlation between the two latter factors and speakers’ discursive preferences.
