2. The Art of Pleasing the Eye : Portraits by Nicolas de Largillierre and Spectatorship with Taste for Colour in the Early Eighteenth Century
Sammanfattning : This study examines the interaction between portraits by the exponent of French colourist painting Nicolas de Largillierre (1656–1745) and elite spectatorship in the early eighteenth century as enactment of the idea of painting as an art of pleasing the eye. As developed in the theory of art of Roger de Piles (1635–1709), the idea of painting as an art of pleasing the eye coexisted with the classicist view, which in turn emphasised the potential of painting to communicate discursive meanings and hence to engage the mind. The aim is to contribute with new interpretations that add to previous research that primarily has studied the body of work from the perspectives of the artist’s intention and biography, and divided his artistic work between visual art and theatre. Sammanfattning : The title of this thesis translates as "Elis Eriksson: Objects and Signs" and concerns the life and work of the Swedish artist Elis Eriksson (1906-2006) as analysed from a semiotic point of view. The semiotic theory applied in the thesis is to be regarded as a theory of cultural semiotics or socio-semiotics, explicitly critical towards the rigid application of linguistic models so often associated with semiotic studies in the human sciences.
