1. InP-based photonic crystals : Processing, Material properties and Dispersion effects
Sammanfattning : Photonic crystals (PhCs) are periodic dielectric structures that exhibit a photonic bandgap, i.e., a range of wavelength for which light propagation is forbidden. The special band structure related dispersion properties offer a realm of novel functionalities and interesting physical phenomena. LÄS MER
2. Solute Transport in Fractured Rocks : The Effect of Stagnant Water Zones and Velocity Dispersion
Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is on the development of new models to improve our understanding of radionuclide transport in the repository “far-field” in fractured rocks. The proposed models contribute to the channel network concept and describe the recently developed models with stagnant water zones (STWZs) and channels with variable aperture allowing to consider their possible impacts on the overall transport of radionuclides in fractured rocks. 3. Compaction, Flow and Dispersion in a Chromatographic Column
Sammanfattning : An experimental and theoretical study of compaction, flow and hydrodynamic dispersion in a chromatographic column containing non-rigid particles is presented. Experiments were performed using chromatographic columns packed with either a dextran-based chromatographic gel or glass beads. LÄS MER
4. Fluid dynamics and mass transfer in bubble columns with and without packing
Sammanfattning : Bubble columns are used in the chemical industry to perform gas liquid reactions, like oxidation, hydrogenation and fermentation. The objective of the present thesis was mainly to study the fluid dynamics of semi batch packed bubble columns at both atmospheric and pressurized conditions. LÄS MER
5. A Particle Image Velocimetry Study of Bubbly Gas-Liquid Flow
Sammanfattning : The aim of this work is to build a framework that can be used for characterizing the bubbly gas liquid turbulent flow in the stirred bioreactor tank. To this end we have developed and modified techniques with which to measure the velocity of both dispersed gas and carrier liquid phases by the optical measurement technique, a 2-CCD camera Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system; and to characterize the turbulence by the wavelets tool, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD).
