6. The role of the adventitia and perivascular tissue for the formation of intimal hyperplasia
Sammanfattning : Symptomatic atherosclerosis is commonly treated with balloon angioplasty or bypass surgery. About 30% of the interventions will re-narrow within a year due to restenosis and graft-stenosis. Thickening of the luminal layer, the intima, is an important component in these side-effects. LÄS MER
7. Interactions between leukocytes, platelets and the endothelium in vein graft failure
Sammanfattning : Autologous venous grafts are preferred conduits in bypass surgery due to their length, easy harvesting, and feasibility. However, development of intimal hyperplasia decreases long-term patency rate in venous grafts prompting close clinical surveillance and further intervention. LÄS MER
8. Haemostatic function in precocious myocardial infarction and vein graft occlusion after coronary artery bypass grafting
Sammanfattning : The present study examined the role of blood coagulation and fibrinolytic function in patients with coronary heart disease in two settings; in patients with precocious myocardial infarction in whom thrombosis is considered to constitute an important pathogenic mechanism and in unselected patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in whom early thrombotic occlusion of vein grafts is a considerable problem. Particular attention was paid to coagulation factor Vll and the tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) in the young post-infarction patients. LÄS MER
9. Cardiac effects of non-adrenergic inotropic drugs : clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Background: Myocardial failure and dysfunction is not uncommon during critical illness and following cardiac surgery. For optimal treatment, a better understanding of the effects of inotropic drugs is needed. In this thesis, two non-adrenergic mediated inotropes, milrinone and levosimendan were studied in different models of myocardial dysfunction. LÄS MER
10. Endothelin and angiotensin II receptors in human coronary arteries and bypass grafts - Alterations in cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : Angiotensin II (Ang II) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) induce strong vasoconstriction via activation of receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells. In this thesis, the contractile Ang II and endothelin receptors were examined in endothelium-denuded human coronary arteries and in bypass grafts (the left internal mammary artery and the saphenous vein), with focus on receptor alterations in cardiovascular disease.
