    Sammanfattning : This study takes its point of departure in the tradition of Christian women covering their hair for religious and cultural reasons, hereafter called veiling. The aim has been to investigate what ideas were projected onto the veil in Sweden during the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as when and how the tradition of veiling disappeared among most Christian Swedes.     Sammanfattning : What does it mean to be “secular”? How are “secular” identities constructed and negotiated? How can one understand that “secularism” has become an important marker of identity for nationalistic forces in Europe?In the dissertation “Everybody, Welcome to France” the author sets out to inquire into the topic of secularism and national identity in contemporary France. The specific research question is how France has been articulated as a “secular” republic in political speech and legislative text in 2003-2011 and how this articulation relates to conceptions of “nation”, “integration”, and “citizenship”.     Sammanfattning : This dissertation argues that interpersonal disputes do not escalate among the Iraqw in Karatu district, Tanzania, because of an indigenous institution called wakari, which entails the erasure of all social contact between opponents in an irreconcilable dispute. In order to clarify the relationship between the role of wakari and other factors influencing the unfolding of a dispute, such as the role of the state, social structure and cultural values promoting peace, the dissertation discusses extensively how local communities have been integrated into colonial and post-colonial systems, and how meanings of peace, conflict, prosperity and poverty are articulated in different contexts by different actors.
