  1. 1. A song of ice and mud : Interactions of microbes with roots, fauna and carbon in warming permafrost-affected soils

    Författare :Sylvain Monteux; Ellen Dorrepaal; Frida Keuper; James T. Weedon; Joshua Schimel; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial communities; permafrost; functional limitations; rhizosphere; SOM decomposition; soil fauna; climate change; carbon dioxide;

    Sammanfattning : Permafrost-affected soils store a large quantity of soil organic matter (SOM) – ca. half of worldwide soil carbon – and currently undergo rapid and severe warming due to climate change. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Solid Waste Landfills in an Arid Environment : Site Selection and Design

    Författare :Ali Chabuk; Jan Laue; Nadhir Al-Ansari; Sven Knutsson; Hussain M. Hussain; Roland Pusch; Rafid Alkhaddar; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Landfill; Arid Environment; Site selection; Design; Babylon; Iraq; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Selecting landfill sites is considered a complicated task because its whole process is based upon several factors and restrictions. This study shows the present status of solid waste management, sources, collection personnel, machinery and equipment that are involved in the waste collection process, financing and financial management for the major cities of the Babylon Governorate in Iraq (Al-Hillah, Al-Qasim, Al-Mahawil, Al-Hashimiyah and Al-Musayiab). 3. 3. Stormy records from peat bogs in south-west Sweden : implications for regional climatic variability and vegetation changes during the past 6500 years

    Författare :Rixt de Jong; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Holocene climate; south-west Sweden; aeolian activity; humidity changes; vegetation development; REVEALS vegetation modelling; atmospheric circulation changes; peat sediments;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to reconstruct and explain variations in storm activity, humidity, vegetation composition and land cover in south-west Sweden during the past 6500 years. Two ombrotrophic bogs, Store Mosse and Undarsmosse, situated on the coastal plain of Halland, were selected for this purpose. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effects of climate change on boreal wetland and riparian vegetation

    Författare :Lotta Ström; Roland Jansson; Christer Nilsson; Sarah Gergel; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biomass; flooding; hydrologic niche; invasibility; riparian zone; riparian plant species; river margin; climate scenario; seed sowing experiment; species composition; species richness; transplant experiment; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestrisk ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Models of climate change predict that temperature will increase during the 21th century and the largest warming will take place at high northern latitudes. In addition to warming, predictions for northern Europe include increased annual precipitation and a higher proportion of the precipitation during winter falling as rain instead of snow. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Reconstruction of Past European Land Cover Based on Fossil Pollen Data : Gaussian Markov Random Field Models for Compositional Data

    Författare :Behnaz Pirzamanbein; Matematisk statistik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Spatial Statistics; Adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo; Dirichlet Observation; Confidence Region; Palaeoecology; Past Human Land Use; Stochastic Partial Differential Equation;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to develop statistical models to reconstruct past land cover composition and human land use based on fossil pollen records over Europe for different time periods over the past 6000 years. Accurate maps of past land cover and human land use are needed when studying the interaction between climate and land surface, and the effects of human land use on past climate. LÄS MER
