11. The role of leptin in endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : Objective: Obesity has become the leading cause of mortality worldwide; however, the fundamental pathophysiology underlying this association remains unclear. The discovery of adipokines, i.e., cytokines produced by adipose cells (adipocytes), revealed that adipose tissue is a highly endocrine organ, thus opening new lines of investigation. LÄS MER
12. Sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in nasal vascular regulation
Sammanfattning : The role of sensory neuropeptides and nitric oxide in vascular regulation was investigated in the pig nasal mucosa in vivo using arterial blood flow measurements and acoustic rhinometry for analysis of capacitance function. Moreover, the effects of heavy physical exercise, a-adrenoceptor agonists, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition, L-arginine, nitric oxide (NO) gas, histamine and capsaicin on nasal cavity NO levels and nasal cavity volume, were investigated in healthy subjects. 13. On the Autonomic Control of Blood Flow and Secretion in Salivary Glands. Functional and morphological aspects on muscarinic receptor subtypes in different species
Sammanfattning : Parasympathetic nervous activity is the principal stimulus for evoking fluid responses within salivary glands. Concomitantly to the onset of this response, the blood flow increases. LÄS MER
14. Cardiovascular health in children and adolescents with obesity : prevalence, prediction and supervised exercise
Sammanfattning : Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death worldwide and is preceded by a long process in which several cardiovascular (CV) risk factors are present, sometimes already in childhood. Some of these risk factors such as non-dipping blood pressure and microvascular endothelial dysfunction and possible associated factors are little studied among children with obesity. LÄS MER
15. Endothelin-1 in the regulation of vascular function and glucose metabolism in insulin resistance
Sammanfattning : Insulin resistance plays a major role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Endothelial dysfunction, characterized by reduced bioactivity of nitric oxide and increased activity of the vasoconstrictor and pro-inflammatory peptide endothelin-1 (ET-1), is present in insulin-resistant states and is an important factor promoting the development of cardiovascular complications in patients with insulin resistance.
