11. Upper gastrointestinal motility, gut hormones and food intake : a study in normal weight and obese humans
Sammanfattning : The regulation of food intake in man is complex and poorly understood. The main aim of the present study was to investigate how a rapid stimulation of the distal small bowel with nutrients influences upper gastrointestinal motility, some gut peptides and food intake in man. LÄS MER
12. The Enteric Nervous System, Plasticity and Survival
Sammanfattning : The thesis deals with plasticity in terms of neurotransmitter expression and survival of neurons in the adult enteric nervous system (ENS). Several motility disorders have been suggested to originate in developmental defects, neurodegeneration, or insufficient innervation by the ENS. LÄS MER
13. Neuroimmune Interactions of Enteric Neurons and Mast Cells: Friends or Foes?
Sammanfattning : Psychological distress or physical strain lead to reduced blood flow in the intestine since other organs are prioritised. One aim of this thesis was to investigate how ischemia followed by reperfusion affects the large intestine and the enteric nervous system (ENS). LÄS MER
14. Neurohormonal Modulators in the Parathyroid Gland. Localization and regulation
Sammanfattning : The occurrence and distribution of neurohormonal peptides, neuroendocrine markers and receptors in parathyroid nerve fibers and endocrine cells are described, using immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization, image analysis and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Immunocytochemical studies revealed that parathyroid glands of chicken, rat, guinea-pig, cat, dog and sheep contained adrenergic-, cholinergic-, and peptide-containing nerve fibers. LÄS MER
15. Histamine receptors and neuropeptides in the cranial circulation
Sammanfattning : The sensory neuropeptides substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) are present in human cerebral, meningeal and temporal arteries, as are peptides associated with the sympathetic (neuropeptide Y, NPY) and parasympathetic (vasoactive intestinal peptide, VIP) nervous system. NPY is a vasoconstrictor in cerebral and meningeal arteries and potentiates noradrenaline (NA) as a vasoconstrictor in temporal arteries. LÄS MER
