  1. 21. Aniridia-related keratopathy : structural changes, signaling pathways and clinical aspects

    Författare :André Vicente; Fatima Pedrosa Domellöf; Berit Byström; Luis Abegão Pinto; Jing-Xia Liu; Anders Ivarsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; aniridia; aniridia-related keratopathy; PAX6; keratoplasty; fetal cornea; Notch1; Wnt; sonic hedgehog; mTOR; keratocyte; oftalmiatrik; ophthalmology;

    Sammanfattning : Aniridia is a congenital autosomal dominant, bilateral, panocular condition, caused by haploinsufficiency of the Pax6 transcription factor. Aniridia-related keratopathy (ARK) significantly affects vision and quality of life in these patients. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Approaches to Treatment of Children with Advanced Neuroblastoma

    Författare :Ingrid Øra; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatrics; drug resistance; hypoxia; apoptosis; arsenic trioxide; treatment; diagnosis; neuroblastoma; sympathetic nervous system; Pediatri; Cytology; oncology; cancerology; Cytologi; onkologi; cancer;

    Sammanfattning : Children with advanced neuroblastoma are at high risk for relapse of multidrug resistant disease, despite initial response to intensive multimodality treatment. Neuroblastomas have similarities with immature neuroblasts seen during embryonic development of the sympathetic nervous system (the origin of these tumors). LÄS MER

  3. 23. Neurogenic and angiogenic actions of electroconvulsive seizures in adult rat brain

    Författare :Johan Hellsten; Enheten för psykiatrisk neuromodulering (PNU); []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vävnadskultur; Psychiatry; clinical psychology; psychosomatics; klinisk psykologi; psykosomatik; histokemi; cytokemi; Histologi; tissue culture; histochemistry; cytochemistry; Histology; Biology; Biologi; electroconvulsive seizures; hippocampus; depression; angiogenesis; neurogenesis; Psykiatri;

    Sammanfattning : In the current thesis, the neurogenic and angiogenic response to electroconvulsive seizure (ECS)-treatment was investigated in the adult rat brain. ECS-treatment is an animal model for the antidepressant treatment electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which is considered to be the most effective antidepressant treatment modality today, however with not yet fully understood modes of action. 4. 24. Three-dimensional ultrasound studies of normal and abnormal ovaries

    Författare :Ligita Jokubkiene; gynekologisk och prenatal ultraljudsdiagnostik Obstetrisk; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ovary; ovarian follicle; ovarian neoplasms; ultrasonography; three-dimensional imaging; Doppler ultrasound imaging; vascular morphology;

    Sammanfattning : The aims of this work were: 1) to estimate the number of follicles, ovarian volume and power Doppler vascular indices and their changes with age using three-dimensional (3D) transvaginal grey-scale and power Doppler ultrasound in asymptomatic women of fertile age either with natural menstrual cycles or using combined oral contraceptives, and 2) to determine whether tumour vascularity, assessed by 3D power Doppler ultrasound, can help discriminate between benign and malignant ovarian tumours. A group of 303 gynaecologically asymptomatic women, aged 20–39 years with normal menstrual cycles (NMC) and another group of 213 women aged 20–39 years using combined oral contraceptives (COC) were examined using two-dimensional (2D) and 3D transvaginal ultrasound once between cycle day 4 and 8. 5. 25. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

    Författare :Mariann Sondell; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Schwann cell; SCG; rat; peripheral nerve regeneration; neuropilin-1; nerve repair; mouse; growth factor; flk-1; axonal outgrowth; DRG; VEGF; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its possible role as a neurotrophic factor. I have investigated the effect of VEGF on neurons in culture but also in vivo, following a crush lesion of the sciatic nerve, and following nerve repair. LÄS MER
