6. Vascular remodeling in pulmonary hypertension
Sammanfattning : Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive obliterative vasculopathy with multifactorial etiology and high mortality rate. Endothelial dysfunction, excessive vascular remodeling, inflammation and in situ thrombosis contribute to increased vascular resistance and gradual occlusion of pulmonary vessels. LÄS MER
7. Dynamic Fetal and Placental Circulatory Changes during Uterine Contractions
Sammanfattning : The best mode of delivery for fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and umbilical artery (UA) blood flow changes is not well elucidated. Uterine artery, fetal UA, middle cerebral artery (MCA), and venous blood flow changes during uterine contractions during an oxytocin challenge test (OCT) have not been observed systemically. LÄS MER
8. Functional Traits in Sphagnum
Sammanfattning : Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are ecosystem engineers that largely govern carbon sequestration in northern hemisphere peatlands. I investigated functional traits in Sphagnum species and addressed the questions: (I) Are growth, photosynthesis and decomposition and the trade-offs between these traits related to habitat or phylogeny?, (II) Which are the determinants of decomposition and are there trade-offs between metabolites that affect decomposition?, (III) How do macro-climate and local environment determine growth in Sphagnum across the Holarctic?, (IV) How does N2 fixation vary among different species and habitats?, (V) How do species from different microtopographic niches avoid or tolerate desiccation, and are leaf and structural traits adaptations to growth high above the water table?Photosynthetic rate and decomposition in laboratory conditions (innate growth and decay resistance) were related to growth and decomposition in their natural habitats. 9. GH/IGF-I axis regulation of cardiovascular and neuronal gene expression and function
Sammanfattning : Abstract Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of mortality in the Western world. Another important clinical condition is brain damage due to radiation therapy in cancer patients. This has neurological impairments presenting in the survivors. For both these conditions, it is important to develop new therapeutic strategies. LÄS MER
10. Cardiorespiratory function of euryhaline teleosts - Regulatory mechanisms, effects of warming and costs of osmoregulation
Sammanfattning : Teleost fishes have colonized almost every aquatic habitat on earth and exhibit adaptations that allow them to thrive in environments with very diverse physico-chemical properties. One fundamental environmental variable in aquatic ecosystems is salinity, as most fish species are only able to tolerate a narrow range of salinities. LÄS MER
