21. The virtual tumour - in silico modelling of tumour vasculature, oxygenation and treatment outcome
Sammanfattning : Poor tumour oxygenation, namely hypoxia, is one of the major challenges that has been recognised in radiotherapy, yet it is not being accounted for in standard treatments. Hypoxia, resulting from a heterogeneous distribution of vessels (chronic hypoxia) or of a loss in vascular perfusion (acute hypoxia), affects all kinds of solid tumours to different extents. LÄS MER
22. Vardenafil and methylarginines in pulmonary hypertension
Sammanfattning : Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare condition characterized by endothelial dysfunction and vascular remodelling, leading to increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and right ventricular heart failure. Endothelial dysfunction is associated with an imbalance between vasoconstrictor compounds, such as endothelin and thromboxane A2, and vasodilator compounds, such as prostacyclin and nitric oxide (NO). 23. On macrophage contributions to tissue homeostasis : New insights on pancreas development and healing of ischemic injury
Sammanfattning : Besides providing host defence against innumerable threats, macrophages display additional key functions for preservation of tissue homeostasis. This thesis includes four studies that explore novel macrophage functions in both the development of islets of Langerhans and healing of ischemic injury in mice. LÄS MER
24. T cells and smoke-induced airway inflammation
Sammanfattning : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an inflammatory disease primarily caused by longterm cigarette smoking. The disease is characterized by both tissue remodelling and an accumulation of inflammatory cells including macrophages, neutrophils and T cells, in the lung. LÄS MER
25. Pericytes in Hypoxia and Ischemic Stroke
Sammanfattning : Molecular oxygen is essential for most living species. Consequently, hypoxic or ischemic conditions are major cellular stressors and prominent pathological features in ischemic stroke. Stroke is a global health problem and remains the second leading cause of death or disability worldwide. LÄS MER
