1. The plant respiratory chain: Redox responses and catalytic definition of alternative pathways
Sammanfattning : The respiratory chain of plants contains both proton-pumping enzymes that conserve energy and non-proton-pumping alternative enzymes that bypass the sites of energy conservation. In addition to the proton-pumping complex I, plant mitochondria contain alternative type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenases, which allow oxidation of NADH and NADPH from the matrix and the cytosol. LÄS MER
2. Molecular regulation of vascular cambium identity and activity
Sammanfattning : In plants, secondary development and wood formation originates from the cell divisions within the vascular meristem, where the vascular stem cells are located. This thesis work presents my results on the molecular regulation of vascular cambium stem cell identity and activity. LÄS MER
3. Plant major intrinsic proteins - functional implications of expression and localisation studies
Sammanfattning : Plant water channels are members of the very old Major Intrinsic Protein (MIP) family, with representatives in bacteria, fungi, animals, and plants. The genome of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana contains 35 MIP genes. LÄS MER
4. Methane dynamics in northern wetlands: Significance of vascular plants
Sammanfattning : The studies presented in Papers I to VI illustrate several different aspects of the impact of vascular plants on methane emissions from northern natural wetlands. The subject has been approached on different scales, ranging from the study of microbial substrates in the vicinity of a single plant root, to an attempt to extrapolate some of the results to the entire northern hemisphere north of 50°N. 5. Haustoria regulation in the facultative parasitic plant Phtheirospermum japonicum
Sammanfattning : Parasitic plants are important agricultural pests that lead to considerable yield losses annually. Parasitic plants that completely rely on their hosts for their survival are known as obligatory parasites, whereas those independent of their hosts but parasitize under the right conditions are known as facultative parasitic plants.
