16. Experimental Studies on the Vasculature of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans
Sammanfattning : The blood vessels of the pancreatic islets are of crucial importance for oxygen and metabolite supply as well as dispersal of secreted hormones. In addition to this, endothelial cells have an important role in the revascularization process after islet transplantation. LÄS MER
17. Engineering the shape of bacterial cellulose and its use as blood vessel replacement
Sammanfattning : Tissue loss and organ failure are major health problems that impose great costs on society. Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 36% of mortalities and the disease burden among adults over the age of 60. The single largest cardiovascular disease is atherosclerosis in the coronary artery. LÄS MER
18. Management of Ischemia and Brain Death-Associated Injuries in Porcine Kidney Grafts
Sammanfattning : Organs from deceased donors after brain death (BD) remain the major source of organs for transplantation. The catastrophic event of BD and the inevitable consequences of ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) are linked to impaired graft quality and transplantation outcome. LÄS MER
19. Extracellular matrix-mediated signaling in the regulation of vascular smooth muscle cell phenotype and function
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in the world. Even though death rates are today dropping in the developed countries, disability due to the disease is rising worldwide. The major portion of cardiovascular disease associated deaths is due to occlusive atherosclerotic lesions. LÄS MER
20. Endothelin and angiotensin II receptors in human coronary arteries and bypass grafts - Alterations in cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : Angiotensin II (Ang II) and endothelin-1 (ET-1) induce strong vasoconstriction via activation of receptors on vascular smooth muscle cells. In this thesis, the contractile Ang II and endothelin receptors were examined in endothelium-denuded human coronary arteries and in bypass grafts (the left internal mammary artery and the saphenous vein), with focus on receptor alterations in cardiovascular disease.
