1. Early diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer : observational studies in the National Prostate Cancer Register of Sweden and the Västerbotten Intervention Project
Sammanfattning : Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing has caused a steep increase in the incidence of prostate cancer, especially the incidence of localised low risk disease. In order to decrease the overdiagnosis accompanied by PSA testing, analysis of inherited genetic variants have been suggested as potential tools for clinical assessment of disease risk. LÄS MER
2. Quality of Life and Functional Outcomes in Men with Localized Prostate Cancer
Sammanfattning : Quality-of-life and functional outcomes are important in the choice of treatment for men with localized prostate cancer. These issues were investigated in the present thesis. All living 400 men randomized to radical prostatectomy or watchful waiting from 1989 to 1999 in the Scandinavian Prostate Cancer Group Number 4 (SPCG-4) were included. LÄS MER
3. Dynamics of the glomerular filtration barrier - Physiological and pathophysiological aspects
Sammanfattning : The dynamic properties of the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) are of fundamental importance for the understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of microalbuminuria and proteinuric diseases. In the studies of this doctoral thesis the properties of the rat glomerular filtration barrier were investigated under resting conditions and following a number of challenges using highly sensitive gel filtration chromatography (HPSEC) detection of FITC-Ficoll in serum and urine. 4. Translational perspectives on MSMB and CRISP3 expression and regulation in prostate cancer
Sammanfattning : Prostate cancer is currently the most common form of cancer in Sweden. Currently, the only biomarker used in the clinic is serum PSA, and there is a great need for new biomarkers that may increase the diagnostic and prognostic information so that better predictions can be made, and treatment may be tailored. 5. Prognostic markers in prostate cancer : studies of a watchful waiting cohort with long follow up
Sammanfattning : Background: Prostate Cancer (PC) is a common and highly variable disease. Using current diagnostic methods, the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and histological grading of prostate tissue needle biopsies, it is often difficult to evaluate whether the patient has a PC that requires active treatment or not.
