1. Selection of the principal cause of death : studies on the basis of mortality statistics for rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : The official statistics of Sweden for 1971-75 show a 2.7-fold increase in mortality for men and a 3.0-fold increase for women attributed to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) as the underlying cause of death. In order to investigate the basis of this observed increase, all death certificates for 1971 and 1975 with a diagnosis of RA (N=1224) were studied. LÄS MER
2. Pediatric ischemic stroke : Epidemiological aspects of validity, risk factors, and outcomes
Sammanfattning : Pediatric ischemic stroke is divided into perinatal stroke, 20 weeks gestation until the 28th day of life, and childhood stroke, the 29th day of life until 18 years of age. Perinatal and childhood stroke differ in risk factors and outcomes but both cause increased mortality and morbidity in the pediatric population. LÄS MER

4. PET and the Multitracer Concept: An Approach to Neuroimaging Pathology
Sammanfattning : Patients suffering from different forms of neurodegenerative diseases, such as: Creutzfeldt Jacob Disease (CJD), Alzheimer disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), frontotemporal dementia and Parkinson’s disease (PD) were examined with Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and the combination of different radiotracers: 15O-water, N-[11C-methyl]-L-deuterodeprenyl (DED), [18F] 2-fluorodeoxyglucose: (FDG), N-methyl-[11C]2-(4-methylaminophenyl)-6-hydroxybenzothiazole (PIB) and L-[11C]-3,4-dihydroxiphenyl-alanine (DOPA). The radiotracers and the combinations of different radiotracers were selected with the intention to detect, in the brain, patterns of neuronal dysfunction, astrocytosis, axon degeneration or protein aggregation (amyloid), in the brain which are pathognomonic for specific diseases and may contribute to improve clinical differential diagnoses. 5. The association of intelligence with morbidity, mortality and disability pension : epidemiological studies in a cohort of Swedish men
Sammanfattning : Intelligence measured early in life is associated with various health outcomes later in life, but the mechanisms underlying the associations are not fully known. The overarching aim of the thesis was to increase the understanding of such associations, and in particular to investigate some potential mechanisms that might explain them. LÄS MER
