16. Plants go with the flow : predicting spatial distribution of plant species in the boreal forest
Sammanfattning : The main objectives of this thesis are to study if a topographic wetness index (TWI) could be used as a tool for predicting the spatial distribution of vascular plant species richness in the boreal forest as well as to study congruence in species richness between vascular plants, liverworts, mosses and lichens. A wetness index ln(a/tanβ) based on topography was used to assign a specific TWI-value to every 20 x 20m grid in two 25 km2 boreal forest landscapes (differing in average soil pH) in northern Sweden. 17. Importance of tannins for responses of aspen to anthropogenic nitrogen enrichment
Sammanfattning : Boreal forests are often strongly nitrogen (N) limited. However, human activities are leading to increased N inputs into these ecosystems, through atmospheric N deposition and forest fertilization. LÄS MER
18. Monitoring climate and plant physiology using deuterium isotopomers of carbohydrates
Sammanfattning : Climate is changing and it is certain that this change is due to human activities. Atmospheric greenhouse gases have been rising in an unprecedented way during the last two centuries, although the land biosphere has dampened their increase by absorbing CO2 emitted by anthropogenic activities. 19. Cold Acclimation : Dissecting the plant low temperature signaling pathway using functional genomics
Sammanfattning : The physiological process of cold acclimation protects plants native to the temperate regions of the world from the deleterious effects of low and freezing temperatures. This is achieved by a series of transcriptional, regulatory, and metabolic changes that enable continued growth and survival. Within minutes of exposure to temperatures below ca. LÄS MER
20. Microbotryum violaceum on Silene dioica : understanding traits that influence plant-pathogen interactions
Sammanfattning : The dynamics of a plant-pathogen interaction vary both within and among species. Both spatial structuring and specific genetic and life-history characteristics will affect the interaction and the outcome of a potential co-evolution between the two organisms. LÄS MER
