  1. 1. Re-evaluation of exercise-induced muscle soreness : an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study

    Författare :Ji-Guo Yu; Bengt Saltin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anatomy; Anatomi; Anatomy; Anatomi;

    Sammanfattning : Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a familiar experience for the elite and novice athletes. Symptoms can range from muscle tenderness to severe deliberating pain. It is generally believed that eccentric contractions produce higher tension on muscle fibres and connective tissues than concentric and isometric contractions. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Matrix resorption in endochondral bone growth : ultrastructural studies, with special attention to the chondroclast

    Författare :Joakim Nordahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :chondroclast; osteoclast; cartilage resorption; TRAP; cathepsin K; fibronectin; bone sialoprotein; osteopontin;

    Sammanfattning : A substantial amount of the calcified cartilage in the distal parts of the epiphyseal plate is resorbed during endochondral growth of long bones. However, the mechanisms involved in this process are still largely unknown. On the other hand, bone-resorption in the lower metaphysis has been thoroughly investigated. LÄS MER

  3. 3. High-molecular-weight insulin-like growth factor 2 : immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and biochemical findings in insulin cells under normal, diabetic, and neoplastic conditions, and its role in non-islet cell tumour hypoglycaemia

    Författare :Anders Höög; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Insulin-like growth factor-2; IGF-2; islets of Langerhans; B-granules; Diabetes Mellitus type 2; insulinoma; Goto-Kakizaki rat; haemangiopericytoma; ultrastructural immunohistochemistry; gene expression.;

    Sammanfattning : IGF-2 immunoreactive (IR) cells were identified in the normal adult pancreas of man and rat and occurred exclusively in insulin-producing cells. When frozen human pancreatic tissue was extracted and gel-size-separated, a high-molecular-weight (HMW) IGF-2 peptide could be identified. LÄS MER

  4. 4. On age related changes in axons and glia of the central nervous system

    Författare :Susanna Kullberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Aging; synaptic input; spinal cord; hippocampus; amino acid neurotransmitters; astrocyte; microglia; oligodendroglia; C bouton; cholinergic; monoaminergic; cytokine;

    Sammanfattning : A growing body of evidence shows that phenotypic changes including axon aberrations, rather than loss of neurons, account for behavioral impairments during aging. The present thesis was undertaken to investigate the occurrence of axon aberrations in relation to transmitter identity, glial reaction and sensorimotor disturbances. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mast cells and neuropeptides in the rat laryngeal mucosa : edema formation and effects of irradiation

    Författare :Mats Lidegran; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Certain diseases in the larynx like epiglottitis, false croup, and allergic reactions lead to local edema, which may result in respiratory distress. The pathophysiology of the various types of edema in the larynx is mainly unknown. LÄS MER
