  1. 1. Effect of Dietary Antioxidants on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Metabolic Factors : Studies in Subjects with Overweight and with Type 2 Diabetes

    Författare :Elisabet Rytter; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Anders Sjödin; Helmut Sies; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Antioxidants; supplementation; fruit and vegetables; oxidative stress; isoprostanes; lipid peroxidation; oxidative damage to DNA; glycaemic control; inflammation; overweight; type 2 diabetes; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Nutrition; Nutrition;

    Sammanfattning : Observational studies have indicated that fruit and vegetables, and dietary antioxidants may play an important role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, potentially by affecting pathogenic mechanisms such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Clinical trials investigating the effects of supplementation with single or a few antioxidants in high doses have, however, shown inconsistent results and thus have not been able to support the observational findings. 2. 2. Characterization of the Pancreas in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

    Författare :Marcus Lundberg; Oskar Skog; Olle Korsgren; Martha Campbell-Thompson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; Type 2 diabetes; HbA1c; interferon-stimulated genes; parasympathetic; axon; cellular stress; islets; exocrine; immunology; leucocytes; inflammation; human; pancreas; Endocrinology and Diabetology; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Immunologi; Immunology; Patologi; Pathology;

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes is recognized by hyperglycaemia and polyuria. Complications, reduced quality of life and staggering health-care costs are all derived from the disease. Two subclasses of diabetes are Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and Type 2 diabetes (T2D). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies on the atherogenicity of apoB-containing lipoproteins in type 2 diabetes

    Författare :Camilla Pettersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Type 2 diabetes; metabolic syndrome; atherosclerosis; VLDL; LDL; secretory phospholipase A2 group V; inflammation; complement; apolipoprotein; lysozyme;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the metabolic syndrome (MetS), two conditions that are rapidly increasing in prevalence, as well as the dyslipoproteinemia and subclinical inflammation characteristic for these conditions, are associated with an increased risk for developing and dying of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this thesis was to investigate possible atherogenic properties of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in T2D and MetS. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Impaired Glucose Tolerance in Childhood Obesity : Contribution of Glucagon, GLP-1 and Inflammation

    Författare :Hannes Manell; Peter Bergsten; Anders Forslund; Jens Juul Holst; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Childhood obesity; impaired glucose tolerance; type 2 diabetes; glucagon; glucagon-like peptide-1; dipeptidyl peptidase-4; inflammation; free fatty acids; insulin; visceral adiposity; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Sammanfattning : In the wake of increased obesity prevalence, impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in childhood and adolescence is increasingly common. Given the negative impacts these conditions have on health over time, understanding the pathophysiology in those affected early in life is important. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Insulin-antagonistic neurohormonal pathways in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes

    Författare :Martin Lundqvist; Jan W Eriksson; Niclas Abrahamsson; André van Beek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; glucagon; cortisol; ACTH; growth hormone; counter-regulation; clamp; hypoglycemia; hyperglycemia; obesity; type 2 diabetes; inflammation;

    Sammanfattning : According to the current paradigm, the development of type 2 diabetes is driven by insulin resistance and the gradual failure of beta cells to compensate for this by secreting adequate amounts of insulin. Obesity is an important risk factor for type 2 diabetes and is considered to influence disease development primarily by induction of insulin resistance, via mechanisms that have not been fully elucidated.
