11. Conflicted Selves : Ironic Representations of Westernization in Three Twentieth-century Turkish Novels
Sammanfattning : For over a century, a dichotomous East–West debate has influenced conceptions of Turkish literature, threatening to reduce single works to products of westernization. This study critically reviews this discourse by investigating how it is addressed through irony in three novels from a period of forty years of the late 20th century: Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’s Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü (The Time Regulation Institute, 1961), Adalet Ağaoğlu’s Ölmeye Yatmak (Lying Down To Die, 1973), and Orhan Pamuk’s Yeni Hayat (The New Life, 1994). 12. Ready, Willing and Able : The Divorce Transition in Sweden 1915-1974
Sammanfattning : This thesis attempts to extend the historical scope of divorce research in Sweden by providing an analysis ofhow the variations in the divorce rate over time and across geographical areas are connected to the economic, normative and institutional restructuring of Swedish society during the period 1915-1974. The thesis finds that the economic reshaping of Sweden into a modern market economy is at the center of the process that has resulted in decreased marital stability during the twentieth century. 14. Den institutionaliserade tävlingsidrotten : Kommuner, idrott och politik i Sverige under 1900-talet
Sammanfattning : The aim of this dissertation is to describe and analyse the development of the sports movement at a local level during the 20th century, focusing on the relationship between the municipality, in a broad sense, and the sports clubs, as well as on the conditions that have affected this relationship and the effects this has had for the clubs’ structural and cultural configuration.The thesis put forward is that there is a link between the parliamentary and governmental description of sport as socially beneficial, the relative autonomy of the sports movement, the institutionalisation of the municipalities’ sports policy and their involvement in the local sports culture and the expansion of competitive sport within the sports movement led by the Swedish Sports Confederation. 15. Utopias of Nation : Local Mass Killing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1941-42
Sammanfattning : This study analyses the mechanisms of local mass violence perpetrated by the Croatian fascist Ustasha organisation and the Serbian nationalist Chetniks in Bosnia and Herzegovina during 1941–42. A theoretical and methodological model has been devised, that is based on an investigation the three “dimensions” of mass killing, namely intent, systematics and magnitude. LÄS MER
