6. Structures, Properties and Dynamics of Turbulent Vortices
Sammanfattning : The development of models for several phenomena that occur in turbulent single- and multi-phase flows requires improved descriptions and quantifications of turbulent vortices. In many engineering applications, the time scale of these phenomena is equal to or smaller than the lifetime of turbulent vortices; consequently, they are not adequately described by using average turbulence properties. 7. Space-adaptive simulation of transition and turbulence in shear flows
Sammanfattning : Transitional and turbulent shear flows are ubiquitous, from the boundary layer developing on an aeroplane wing to the flow within the aortic arch. In this thesis, we study wall-bounded and free shear flows through direct numerical simulations. LÄS MER
8. Edge states and transition to turbulence in boundary layers
Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is the numerical study of subcritical transition to turbulence in boundary-layer flows. For the most part, boundary layers with uniform suction are considered. Constant homogeneous suction counteracts the spatial growth of the boundary layer, rendering the flow parallel. LÄS MER
9. Mesoscale dynamics and boundary-layer structure in topographically forced low-level jets
Sammanfattning : Two types of mesoscale wind-speed jet and their effects on boundary-layer structure were studied. The first is a coastal jet off the northern California coast, and the second is a katabatic jet over Vatnajökull, Iceland. LÄS MER
10. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent premixed flames at high Karlovitz numbers: structure and modelling
Sammanfattning : There has been recent increased interest in premixed flames and in particular for use in gas turbines for power generation. This is a development that follows from increasing demands for high efficiency and low emissions of NOx, which can be achieved by using premixed flames and lean pre-heated mixtures, often close to the lean flammability limit.
