11. Studies of Mesenchymal Progenitor Cells and Tumour Growth, Integrins and Matrix Metalloproteinases
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we characterize the effect of mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs) on tumour growth, and show that MPCs can have inhibitory effects on tumour development. We developed a method to subcutaneously transplant tumour cells, cultured in vitro in a pre-formed gelatin matrix, that made it possible to study the early phases of tumour development. LÄS MER
12. From a Road Less Travelled to a Worn Path: Three-Dimensional Tumour Models for Cancer Research and Therapeutics
Sammanfattning : Cancer is the second leading cause of death among both men and women worldwide. During therecent years, three-dimensional (3D) tumour models have gained increasing interest as a pre-clinicalplatform for screening of compounds for potential use in cancer therapy. LÄS MER
13. Apoptosis induced by a human milk protein complex. Cellular and structural studies in tumour cells and bacteria
Sammanfattning : Human milk contains a vast array of bioactive molecules, with nutritional and protective functions. This thesis describes the effects of a human milk protein complex, MAL, on tumour cells and bacteria. During our studies on the anti-adhesive properties of human milk we observed that a milk fraction killed tumour cells. LÄS MER
14. Prognostic role of the tumour microenvironment in esophago-gastric, pancreatic and periampullary adenocarcinoma: B cells and beyond
Sammanfattning : Cancer development depends on cells aquiring a skillset of limitless growth and finally invasive properties to allow for metastasis, as summarised by the six hallmarks of cancer. Recently four more hallmarks have been added: genomic instability, deregulating cellular metabolism, tumour-promoting inflammation and avoiding immune destruction. LÄS MER
15. The leukocyte complexity and mutational landscape of periampullary adenocarcinoma. Morphology matters
Sammanfattning : Background: Periampullary adenocarcinomas are a heterogenous group of tumours with poor prognosis that hasnot improved considerably the last decades. Tumour morphology, i.e. intestinal type (I-type) or pancreatobiliarytype (PB-type), has been demonstrated to be a more relevant prognostic factor than anatomical origin. LÄS MER
