1. Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests
Sammanfattning : This thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human reliance on forest resources and rural people use forest resources. Data for the first four evaluations were obtained from surveys, manipulative experiments in seedling plots and collected leaf samples in three pairs of sites with high (hunted sites) and low (protected sites) hunting pressure but with similar adult tree composition. 2. Thermal plasticity and limitations in tropical trees
Sammanfattning : Tropical forests are the most carbon dense and biodiverse terrestrial biome on earth. In a time of global warming and biodiversity crisis, their preservation must be of high priority. At the same time, they likely operate close to their thermal limits because of a historically and seasonally stable environment. LÄS MER
3. Morphological and chemical leaf traits of tropical montane tree species and their responses to warming
Sammanfattning : Leaf morphological and chemical traits of tropical trees vary along climate gradients, but it is currently unclear how they will respond to a rapidly warming climate and how this will vary among species. Considering this, tropical trees native to East and Central Africa were investigated in three complementary studies in Rwanda. LÄS MER
4. Rooting for forest resilience : Implications of climate and land-use change on the tropical rainforests
Sammanfattning : Tropical rainforests in the Amazon and Congo River basins and their climate are mutually dependent. Evaporation from these forests help regulate the regional and global water cycle. Furthermore, these rainforests themselves depend on precipitation to sustain their structure and functions. LÄS MER
5. Climate Change sensitivity of Photosynthesis and Respiration in Tropical Trees
Sammanfattning : Tropical climate is getting warmer, with more pronounced dry periods in large areas. The productivity and climate feedbacks of future tropical forests depend on the ability of trees to acclimate their physiological processes, such as photosynthesis and leaf respiration, to these new conditions.
