  1. 11. Spinal cord grafts : interaction with cografts and effects of trophic factors

    Författare :Katarzyna Trok; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :cord injury; spinal cord transplants; regeneration; GDNF; neurotrophins; CNTF; 5HT; immunohistochemistryKatarzyna Trok; 1996ISBN 91-6;

    Sammanfattning : Spinal cord injury is common in the modern society, often afflicts young individuals, and often has devastating consequences. The present work studies possibilities to obtain better conditions for regeneration of the transected spinal cord in rats, conditions under which spinal cord grafts are able to establish structural and functional connections with "natural" targets, and effects of a series of neurotrophic factors on spinal cord graft survival and growth. 2. 12. Effects of temperature and terrestrial carbon on primary production in lake ecosystems

    Författare :Mohammed Hamdan; Jan Karlsson; Pär Byström; Erin R. Hotchkiss; Lars-Anders Hansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lakes; primary production; benthic; pelagic; carbon dioxide limitation; light limitation; nutrient limitation; browning; warming; allochthonous carbon; grazing; trophic cascades;

    Sammanfattning : Climate warming is predicted to affect northern lake food webs in two ways: (1)directly via changes in water temperature and ice conditions, and (2) indirectlyvia changes in catchment characteristics and processes that influence input ofallochthonous coloured dissolved organic matter (cDOM) and nutrients. Input ofcDOM increases carbon dioxide (CO2) availability, causes brownification andreduced light conditions, and may increase nutrient availability especially forpelagic primary producers. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Trophic effects on the maintenance of biodiversity in the Fucus zone

    Författare :Sonja Råberg; Lena Kautsky; Christer Brönmark; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biodiversity; epiphytes; eutrophication; faunal assemblage; filamentous algae; Fucus radicans; Fucus vesiculosus; grazers; nutrient supply; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Ecologically important macroalgae with large thalli and complex structures are threatened worldwide due to anthropogenic activities such as pollution. In the northern Baltic Sea the salinity is very low; the only large algae producing complex structural habitats found there are the fucoid species Fucus radicans and F. vesiculosus. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Differential effects of voluntary running on hippocampal plasticity in the adult rat brain

    Författare :Andrew Stuart Naylor; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :exercise; hippocampus; stress; progenitor proliferation; neurogenesis; trophic factors; frontal cortex; spatial memory; rat; pCREB; endogenous opioids;

    Sammanfattning : The continuation of neuronal birth from dividing neural stem cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus throughout adulthood is known to play an important role in maintaining normal hippocampal function, such as memory and learning. Negative alterations in the levels of adult neurogenesis have also been linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer s disease and mood disorders such as depression. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Effects of warming on the ecology of algal-dominated phytobenthic communities in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Filip Svensson; Pauline Snoeijs; Johan Eklöf; Hans Kautsky; Nils Ekelund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; warming; photosynthesis; trophic cascades; pigments; community traits; temperature gradient; invasive mussel; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Through climate change, the global average air and surface water temperature has risen 0.85°C during the last 100 years. The Baltic Sea experienced one of the most rapid increase in temperature recorded of marine ecosystems. LÄS MER
