1. Causal inference and case-control studies with applications related to childhood diabetes
Sammanfattning : This thesis contributes to the research area of causal inference, where estimation of the effect of a treatment on an outcome of interest is the main objective. Some aspects of the estimation of average causal effects in observational studies in general, and case-control studies in particular, are explored. LÄS MER
2. Covariate selection and propensity score specification in causal inference
Sammanfattning : This thesis makes contributions to the statistical research field of causal inference in observational studies. The results obtained are directly applicable in many scientific fields where effects of treatments are investigated and yet controlled experiments are difficult or impossible to implement. LÄS MER
3. Some Aspects of Propensity Score-based Estimators for Causal Inference
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four papers that are related to commonly used propensity score-based estimators for average causal effects. The first paper starts with the observation that researchers often have access to data containing lots of covariates that are correlated. LÄS MER
4. The social ecology of alcohol and drug treatment : Client experiences in context
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis is to study how individuals with alcohol and drug problems come to treatment – who is in treatment and who is not? It further studies the goal and role of treatment according to different groups – clients, staff and politicians. How can we understand clients’ experiences in a context? The main data is from the Women and men in Swedish alcohol and drug treatment-study, with a representative sample of clients as well as complementary data on the views of staff and the general population. 5. Advances in Microwave Hyperthermia Treatment using Time Reversal
Sammanfattning : The last twenty years have seen many clinical studies showing the ability of hyperthermia to remarkably enhance response to radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The objective of hyperthermia treatment is to raise the temperature in tumors to therapeutic levels, for a sufficient period of time, in order to achieve cell death or render the cells more sensitive to ionizing radiation and/or chemotherapy.
