1. Varicose Veins : Aspects on Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment
Sammanfattning : Treatment for varicose veins (VV) is insufficiently evidence based and recurrence rates are high. The aim of this thesis was to study the long-term results after VV surgery, risk factors for recurrences and the effect of preoperative duplex scanning on recurrence rate, quality of life (QoL) and costs. 2. Optimization of TB/HIV co-treatment in Ethiopian patients
Sammanfattning : Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV infection act with deadly synergy. HIV is the most important risk factor for latent TB reactivation and active TB progression following exposure or reinfection while TB accelerates HIV progression. TB is the most frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in HIV infection. LÄS MER
3. Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome : a disorder of cholesterol synthesis : diagnosis, treatment and pathogenetic aspects
Sammanfattning : In 1993 it was first suggested that the Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS), described almost 30 years earlier as a malformation syndrome, is caused by defective synthesis of cholesterol. Hypocholesterolaemia and accumulation of the immediate precursor 7-dehydrocholesterol was consistent with deficient activity of the enzyme in the last step of the synthesis, 7-dehydrocholesterol-7-reductase. 4. Energy-metabolic aspects of ischemia and pre-treatment: studies in porcine myocardium
Sammanfattning : The focus of this thesis is to clarify mechanisms involved in protective pre-treatment of ischemia by carbon monoxide (CO) and ischemic preconditioning (IP), so that new pro-tective therapies can be designed. This is studied in heart muscle, where the clinical gain would ultimately be to be able to prolong the period during a threatened myocardial infarction where permanent injury can be prevented. 5. Optimization of HIV and tuberculosis co-treatment in Tanzania : drug-drug interactions and clinical outcomes
Sammanfattning : Background: Sub-Saharan Africa has been greatly affected by the HIV epidemic, with an estimated 23.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) residing within this region by the end of 2011, being the leading course of morbidity and mortality. Tanzania is one of the countries in this region with an HIV prevalence of 5.7% i. LÄS MER
