1. Travelling objects : modernity and materiality in British Colonial travel literature about Africa
Sammanfattning : This study examines the functions of objects in a selection of British colonial travel accounts about Africa. The works discussed were published between 1863 and 1908 and include travelogues by John Hanning Speke, Verney Lovett Cameron, Henry Morton Stanley, Mary Henrietta Kingsley, Ewart Scott Grogan, Mary Hall and Constance Larymore. 2. Tidens tröskel : Uppbrott och nostalgi i skandinavisk litteratur kring sekelskiftet 1900
Sammanfattning : This study illuminates Scandinavian literature’s engagement with the fin de siècle as a momentous temporal threshold, when the widespread feeling of being poised on the brink of a distinctly modern age while at the same time witnessing the demise of the old world produced excitement as well as anxiety, a sense of loss and nostalgia. The dissertation explores how three male authors of the Scandinavian canon – Ola Hansson, August Strindberg and Knut Hamsun – depict the ambivalent experience of being torn between nostalgia and a heady sense of departure. Sammanfattning : The principal aim of this dissertation is to uncover signifying patterns in Henri Michaux’s travel fiction Voyage en Grande Garabagne, and to situate the work in a literary as well as an extralinguistic context. Hereby the dissertation seeks to modify the traditional image of both Voyage and Michaux’s entire literary output as creations allegedly cut off from extralinguistic reality, the literary tradition, and the reader. In Peace Shall Destroy Many (1962), in The Blue Mountains of China (1970), and in Sweeter Than All the World (2001), the phenomenon of movement is complexly at work as a decisive factor on numerous levels of constitution.
