1. Translation as Linear Transduction : Models and Algorithms for Efficient Learning in Statistical Machine Translation
Sammanfattning : Automatic translation has seen tremendous progress in recent years, mainly thanks to statistical methods applied to large parallel corpora. Transductions represent a principled approach to modeling translation, but existing transduction classes are either not expressive enough to capture structural regularities between natural languages or too complex to support efficient statistical induction on a large scale. 2. -ein allzu weites Feld? : zu Übersertzungstheorie und Übersetzungspraxis anhand der Kulturspezifika in fünf Übersetzungen des Romans "Ein weites Feld" von Günter Grass
Sammanfattning : The present dissertation investigates literary translation from a cultural perspective by comparing the translation of culture-specific words and concepts in five different translations of the novel Ein weites Feld by Günter Grass. The translations were chosen to represent three ‘small’ (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian) and two ‘large’ (American English, French) languages and cultures, in order to find out whether these categories are characterized by different ‘foreignizing’ or ‘domesticating’ translation methods. 3. The Dynamics of Extratextual Translatorship in Contemporary Sweden : A Mixed Methods Approach
Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with Swedish translators and the society in which they work. It begins with an exploration of the concept of translatorship, leading up to a three-part distinction of 1) textual translatorship, 2) paratextual translatorship, and 3) extratextual translatorship. 4. Compound Processing for Phrase-Based Statistical Machine Translation
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore how compound processing can be used to improve phrase-based statistical machine translation (PBSMT) between English and German/Swedish. Both German and Swedish generally use closed compounds, which are written as one word without spaces or other indicators of word boundaries. LÄS MER
5. Käännösstrategiat ja diskurssit : analyysi 1600–1800-lukujen ranskalaisista Lapin-kuvauksista ja niiden moderneista suomennoksista
Sammanfattning : In my dissertation, I study the ways discourses of Finnishness and Saminess are being construed in three French travel depictions dating from 17th to 19th century and their Finnish translations dating from the late 20th century. Firstly, I examine the discursive image of Lapland in the French source texts and the Finnish target texts. LÄS MER
